"The Freeze," "The Achy Breaky," and "The Macarena" are not included, but Van McCoy's disco classic, "The Hustle," is. Most of the others belong to an earlier age when dancers bent their knees and backs to do the "Limbo Rock," flapped their elbows to the "Chicken Dance," shuffled their soles to the "Mexican Hat Dance," and waved their hands over their heads for "The Hokey Pokey." This is not the sort of album you'll want to sit around and listen to, but if you're having friends over to the house and you're afraid they're going to talk about the federal budget, you might want to put this on.

Because Brave Combo is a bohemian band from Austin, these songs have two layers. At the forefront of the mix, the tune and beat are strong and clear, but in the background, secondary beats and jazzy embellishments are complicating things. Derek Bell recorded Carolan's Receipt in 1975, the same year he joined the Chieftains. This was one of the first LPs devoted to the music of the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan, and it helped to introduce his music to the world. The selections include "Sídh Beag agus Sídh Mór," the first melody O'Carolan composed, as well "Carolan's Farewell to Music," which was his last. Bell plays most of the pieces on the solo harp, although his new bandmates accompany him on a few tunes. Much as with the art of Japanese cuisine, each element in the performance of this often centuries-old music has symbolic importance, from the type and shape of the instrument being used to the sound of a player's breath before he or she moves on to the next note. Each is an essential part of an exquisite greater whole. The same can be said for this latest reissue of East Asian recordings from the Nonesuch Explorer Series: the austere cover artwork and the historical liner notes in the CD booklet, along with the music itself, form a deep impression of the nature of Kabuki theatre, its philosophy as well as its sound. That should come as no surprise to the many fans of the Explorer Series, which has been introducing music from around the globe to adventurous listeners for forty years. This particular edition, Kabuki and Other Traditional Music, is a fascinating companion piece to Shakuhachi: A Bell Ringing in the Empty Sky, reissued this spring. Whereas that disc presented spare, contemplative solo works played by Goro Yamaguchi, the highly dramatic tracks here are performed by the eleven-piece Ensemble Nipponia. The group, which formed in 1964, became known around the world for its skill at reviving and preserving traditional Japanese repertoire and for its desire to showcase modern work in a similar mould, employing the same instruments as the musicians who had conjured up these sounds many generations before. These live performances were recorded by Explorer Series producer David Lewiston in October, 1978 at the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City during Ensemble Nipponia's second American tour. The album's first half consists of excerpts from the naguata ("long song") music that accompanies the dances featured in Kabuki theatre and serves as background music during its narrative portions. Featured throughout is the shamisen, a three-stringed lute not unlike a banjo; in most of the Kabuki pieces, tailored for the concert hall rather than a theatre, the shamisen is the focus. Listen to "Atsumori," however, adapted from an 800 year-old military epic, and one will also hear an impassioned human voice propelling the action. The final two pieces were composed by Ensemble Nipponia leader Minoru Miki, who, in his writing, combines the traditional with the contemporary and, in the process, creates something timeless.

Here's a disc of 19 familiar and unfamiliar Kurt Weill songs arranged for dance band and played by an expert group of specialists in Roaring Twenties band music. They're led by singer-conductor-composer H.K. Gruber, whose previous recordings include Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper. The result is a start-to-finish delight. From the first notes, you're beamed back in time to one of those sleek transatlantic passenger liners, sitting in an art deco ballroom watching elegant couples in tuxedos and ball-gowns swirl by while the band plays hits from Weill's German and Broadway triumphs. Sure, the venom is leached from the originals, but who needs agitprop when you're on a dance floor? The arrangements are by a variety of hands, hired by Weill's European and American publishers with his approval to get more mileage from his musical theater works. They're delightfully square rhythmically and formulaic in transferring Weill's music to conventional dance bands, but the music still holds up and is fun to hear in its new clothes. A special treat is the eight tracks with Max Raabe, whose light tenor and falsetto singing preserve the spirit of Weill's songs, as well as perfectly mimic the boy band singers of times gone by. --Dan Davis

It's a tough album, with Leroy Sibbles guiding the selection as well as sharing bass duties -- there are versions of his classic composition "Guiding Star" and stylish Wackies heavyweight, "This World." "Tribute To Studio One" reworks Heptones' "Gonna Fight"/"Hail Don D." as modern steppers, with the kit-drums -- as throughout this album -- supplemented effectively by the latest electronic innovation from Japan. The term crossover can mean many things, and, as Sony Classical has proved time and again, attempts to package classical artists as sophisticated dabblers in world music can be as embarrassing as it is, on rare occasions, stunning. On the cover of this, their Sony Classical debut recording, we have four essentially classically-trained guitarists slouching like members of a rock group. The 60-minute disc careers through music inspired by Africa, Brazil, the Balkans, Chile and Japan, with stops in reggae, jazz, and New Music along the way. Lazar Weiner (1897-1982) is considered the father and consummate master of the Yiddish art song; in the course of 60 years he composed more than 200. Born in the Ukraine, he became a synagogue choir-boy at age nine and studied piano and theory at Kiev Conservatory, while getting acquainted with both Western and Russian music. He emigrated to New York in 1914, played piano for silent movies and vocal coaches, and conducted community orchestras and secular Jewish choruses. Making friends with Yiddish poets and writers led to his fascination with Jewish music and the discovery of the Yiddish song. This album's 32 songs are representative of his work. Continuing the romantic Lied tradition, he melded text and music and made the pianist an equal collaborator. Indeed, his piano parts' textural variety and predominantly impressionist style are among the songs' most striking characteristics. Another influence was Mussorgsky, whose vocal writing arises directly from the rhythms and inflections of speech. Thus, several of Weiner's most dramatic, narrative songs sound like half-spoken recitatives. Almost all the songs are in minor keys; most are melancholy, mournful, yearning, nostalgic. But there are also two witty "Humoresques," several touching love songs (written for his wife), tender lullabies, and prayers both devout and despairing. The performers, who include Weiner's pianist son and soprano daughter-in-law, are uniformly excellent and totally committed. --Edith Eisler

During the early phase of conceptualizing what would become The Music of Islam, at least one volume was planned to be recorded in Iraq, in the ancient city of Basra. However, the tempest of world politics prevented us from accomplishing this goal.

With no legal means to enter Iraq our approach changed to a global search for Iraqi musicians. And to our surprise, in the beautiful port city of Doha in the small Emirate of Qatar on the east coast of the Arabian peninsula (not too far south of the Iraqi border), we discovered an expatriate community of Iraqi musicians, all born in Baghdad and graduates of Baghdad University.

The Music of Islam, Volume Four embraces some of the most beautiful Islamic music from Iraq, featuring the 'ud and various percussion instruments, performed by Iraqi master musicians who keep their music traditions alive in Qatar.

Discovered by MA's Todd Garfinkle playing in the Metro in Paris, the members of Formatia Valea Mare all come from the same village in Moldava named, of course, Valea Mare. While in Romania, they all held other jobs (mostly in agriculture), but still played at weddings, births, and funerals. The brass band tradition in Valea Mare started around 1850, with the original members teaching their children how to play the various instruments, all handed down from grandfather, to son, to grandson.

This Guy Klucevsek recording covers widely varying terrain, from the highly emotional to the bizarrely witty. The CD presents the premiere recording of Aaron Jay Kernis’s profoundly intense Hymn. Kernis considers the work, based on his haunting memories of visits to concentration camps, as one of “a series of works which have taken a central position in my oeuvre.”

Other deeply personal works are Somei Satoh’s spiritually reflective Recitative (written after his stepfather’s death) and Jerome Kitzke’s boisterous Breath and Bone (a elegy for a good friend).

Klucevsek’s Burt Bacharach arrangements move from the delightfully ridiculous to the sublimely ethereal in just a few short minutes.

The performer writes that Lars Hollmer’s piece has “one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard,” while Klucevsek’s own Three of a Kind offer what Starkland feels are possibly his most austerely gorgeous works yet.

Add in Stephen Montague’s virtuousic work and Lois V Vierk’s energetic piece (also both premiere recordings) and the result is a powerful, highly varied recording.

This Transylvanian Softwear CD is further proof that Guy Klucevsek consistently offers some of the most listenable new music heard today. Kyle Gann comments that "Klucevsek is one of those natural-born musicians incapable of turning out an unmusical phrase," noting the "graceful musicianship that informs his every gesture." It's not surprising that Stereo Review awarded this CD a "Recording of Special Merit," calling it "a funny and original album by an unusual artist."

"One of only two or three important accordion composers" (The New Yorker), Klucevsek has also commissioned a wide variety of composers, including Fred Frith, Aaron Jay Kernis, Alvin Lucier, Christian Marclay, Lois V Vierk, and John Zorn. He has also performed and/or recorded with Laurie Anderson, Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell, and the Kronos Quartet.

Klucevsek's "original, sweetly postminimal vocabulary" often draws on world folk music. The title piece on the CD is based on Hasidic wedding music, while the lovely Viavy Rose Variations is based on traditional melodies from Madagascar, and the moving Perusal is inspired by Andean pan-pipe music. The rhythmically infectious Three Microids is a tribute to Bela Bartok, and the heartfelt Bandoneons, Basil and Bay Leaves was written in memory of Astor Piazzolla.

Other pieces include John Zorn's zigzagging Road Runner, William Duckworth's smoothly exotic Slow Dancing in Yugoslavia, and Fred Frith's oddly humorous The Disinformation Polka.

If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. The editors at the Madacy label did a nice job with this collection in choosing stirring, beautiful traditional music from various Native American cultures. Liner notes would have helped explain the significance and context of the different songs, but even without them the performances are highly enjoyable. Included are chants and dances from the Cherokee, Navaho, Sioux, and Comanche nations as well as a "Rain Chant," "Burial Chant," "Hunter's Chant," and other songs whose origins are not identified. Most of the songs present strong unison male voices backed by a large ceremonial drum. However, the whistles far in the background of "Dance of the Sun God" and "Chieftain Dance" add a delicate counterpoint, effectively evoking the mysteries of the natural world, the next world, and the meeting of the two. --Bob Tarte
