Music Festival in Nantes, France. Since the performance the legend of this recording has mounted as Jack’s legions of fans have searched far and wide for copies of it. As a special bonus, Forbidden Planet Explored contains a second disc full of sci-fi sound effects inspired by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (highly innovative collaborative workshop responsible for early groundbreaking electronic music which was used as the soundtrack for numerous BBC programs starting in the sixties) and vintage sci-fi films such as Forbidden Planet.

Sci Fi Sound Effects was created on his room sized EMS Synthi 100. Jack’s Synthi 100 is one of the only 29 ever built and one of the only Synthi’s known to be operational. Though bits of Kiss My Arp remind one of a moody, mysterious DJ Rap, Andrea Parker is more than the thinking man's DJ Rap. As one of the torchbearers for eclectic electro, Parker turns in music that is both refined and rough; stirring strings soar with shifty breakbeats and manipulated found sounds. Parker weaves sonic odds and ends into chunky electro workouts like "Melodious Thunk," which was previously available in a modified version as an import. Easily the gem of the album, "Melodious Thunk" sounds just like the name implies: heavy, sweltering bass drum kicks, raunchy electro noise and percolating synths carry the track through to its magnificent end. The record reaches its lowest point when Parker sings in a distant voice that neither provokes nor engages the listener (see "The Unknown"). But the beats, as they say, are phat. --Tricia Romano

On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. This is Phill Niblock's third release on the Touch label. Phill Niblock is a New York-based minimalist composer and multi-media musician and director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation born in the flames of 1968's barricade hopping. He has been a maverick presence on the fringes of the avant garde ever since. In the history books Niblock is the forgotten Minimalist. His influence has had more impact on younger composers such as Susan Stenger, Lois V. Vierk, David First, and Glenn Branca. Touch Three is minimalism in the classic sense of the word, if that makes sense. Niblock constructs big 24-track digitally-processed monolithic microtonal drones, and the result is sound without melody or rhythm. Movement is slow, geologically slow. Changes are almost imperceptible, and his music has a tendency of creeping up on you. The vocal pieces are like some of Ligeti's choral works, but a little more phased. He says: "What I am doing with my music is to produce something without rhythm or melody, by using many microtones that cause movements very, very slowly." These nine pieces were made from March 2003 to January 2005. They were all made (except "Sax Mix") by recording a single instrument with a single microphone. The recordings were direct to the computer/hard disk, most of them using a Powerbook G4, Pro Tools, an M-box and an external firewire drive. The resulting mono sound files were edited to remove breathing spaces, leaving the natural decay of the tone, and the attack of the subsequent iteration of the same tone. Each note was represented by several repetitions, perhaps ten for each tone, of about 15 seconds duration each. Each piece uses a few tones. A simple chord, perhaps. Additional microtonal intervals were produced in Protools using pitch shift. The pieces were assembled in multitracks, usually either 24 or 32 tracks. The recording environment varied from a simple apartment in Berlin (Ulrich Krieger's) to a very large hall used for symphony orchestra performances and recordings, with a sizable audience space. The recordings were generally done quite closely miked. One hears only the sound of the instrument. There is no electronic manipulation in the recording, the editing of the tones, or in the mix. The only changes to the recorded tones are the pitch shifts to create microtones...the microtones are doing the work.

Asking a DJ to produce a mix record isn't the most revolutionary idea in the world, but the DJ Kicks series offers a slightly different spin. Contributing artists are tasked with delving into the deep recesses of their collections and challenging listeners with unexpected combinations. Past entries have landed somewhere on a continuum from "interesting and insightful" to "excruciating, hipper-than-thou obscurity." Hot Chip's entry in the series manages to stay on the good side of that scale. Of course, Hot Chip are barely DJs at all, as records like 2006's The Warning veer wildly between indie rock and tweaked pop-dance hybrids. That freewheeling instinct serves them well here, creating stylistic whiplash and rattling the listener with a fun, herky-jerky flow. The first 25 minutes or so are especially good, with a quick snip of Positive K's "I Got a Man" up against the fat bass sound of Gramme's "Like You," eventually peaking with "Bizarre Love Triangle." You'll want to Google some of the music in this batch, especially Soundhack and the standout track "B1." Later, the record loses its nerve and devolves into more or less a straight dance record, with only occasional sparks like Wookie's "Far East." But they finish strong, following up Audion’s "Just F***ing" with Joe Jackson and Ray Charles. While it's not perfect, this DJ Kicks manages an unforced cool and a healthy unpredictability that stops just short of random, making Hot Chip seem both hip and unpretentious. --Matthew Cooke

Despite the trancy head music Dara tosses into the first few minutes of his fourth studio record, this is mostly classic minimalist drum & bass, served cold and relentless. The dark melodicism of the genre reigns throughout, with booming dub bass grooves adding color to haunting layers of rhythmic frosting. The production here is spotless, and the mix is clean and accomplished. Dara fuses his hyperanthems with occasional touches of house, most effectively in songs such as Future Cut's "Whiplash," and does provide intermittent pauses for a deep breath or two. Still, the tracks here can be inflexible, staying in a too-solid groove throughout those seamless transitions. While Dara ventures into some clever mix choices and inventive beat arrangements towards the end of the record, his efforts to make an ultrabright-sounding mix occasionally overshadow his creative impulses. Formerly known as Panasonic (before a certain Japanese corporation made known its dislike for their moniker) the Finnish duo Pan Sonic creates radical, contemporary electronic music. A goes even further than its predecessor, 1997's Kulma, in its quest for purity. Like an episode of the TV show ER minus all the doctors and patients, the record is about the machines' point of view. This is the sound of fibrillators sighing and electrocardiographs hiccupping, of circuits barely connecting and instruments running by themselves while nobody's looking. It's hard to fathom what Pan Sonic could possibly do after this album, since they've painted themselves into an abstract corner. This new record from Gus Gus is actually not new at all, nor is it really from Gus Gus. Instead, it's a collection of releases from a previous collaboration between two of Gus Gus's many soon-to-be members--Herb Legowitz, then known as Maggi Lego, and computer programmer Biggi Veira, a.k.a. Thorarinsson. This material, recorded under the name t-world between 1992 and 1995, has aged well, and shows off much of the same melodic repetition and expansion of modern trance music. There's a definite old-school-ish house groove the boys were working off of, though, like on "Anthem," a track that was initially slated for DJ Darren Emerson's initial release with Underworld. A soulful bass line pumps up a dreamy melody, expanding within a familiar pattern of repetition and rhythmic progression that has since been many a DJ's stock in trade. Other tracks presage the dominance of trance music that would flower in the late '90s. "Purple" gives off a glittery vibe from the get-go, making compelling use of a breathy, three-note vocal that's catchy enough to make any 21st-century crowd whip out their glowsticks. Yet this collection finds t-world consistently choosing restraint over easy manipulations, still leaving the listener wanting for release. Gently receding into swirling keyboard patterns and briefly pulling back from the thump, t-world's hypnotic sense of pace was made to settle under your skin and into your brain's pleasure centers. Some of the year 2000's lazier trance DJ's, whose numbers seem to rise by the hour, could do well to seek out such other specialists in restraint for inspiration. --Matthew Cooke

Although Autechre's Sean Booth and Rob Brown are firmly rooted in the British hip-hop and electro scenes of the early 1980s, their music is experimental, mathematical, and precise; electro is used merely as a starting point for further exploration of synthetic sounds. On Incunabula, their contribution to Warp's Artificial Intelligence series, the roots of their sound are laid bare. Electro beats are tranquilized and obscured, shifted into alternate time signatures, and used as anchors for repetitive synth hooks and dense layers of effects, resulting in a sound that is exquisitely cold and mechanical. Back in the mid-1990s, the release of a new Orb album would have been something of an event. By 2001, most people had probably forgotten that they still existed (their previous album, Orblivion, was released three years before that, an eternity in the world of modern electronic music). Some music critics even questioned the band's relevance in the 21st century. In an age of sophisticated chill-out tastes, could the Orb still cut it? From the evidence on Cydonia, the answer is a resounding yes. The album sees mainman Alex Paterson fusing rolling dub bass lines and classic Orb ambiance with crisp breaks, shimmering synths, and off-kilter electronics. There are spacious vocal numbers (singers Aki and Nina Walsh sound remarkably like Björk); short, dub-house instrumentals; and spooky, other-worldly drum & bass pieces. It's like rave-era ambient house given a new millennium makeover. It's hardly revolutionary, but that's not the point. After 2000's incredible 3-disc set Xen Cuts, Zen delivers another journey into turntablism as only a label like Ninja Tune can provide. With such wildly creative artists spinning under their banner, it's no wonder the label loves a good compilation. Artists like Coldcut, Kid Koala, and The Herbalizer compose in their sleep, dreaming of wax like the rest of us do sheep. Zen focuses on those dreams, cherry-picking some of the more ambient breaks for a mix that hovers over the decks, like a ghost, sampled and spun along with the music. The tracks here are a bit overly-familiar; Amon Tobin's "Get Your Snack On," brilliant though it is, has been included on comps like this once too often already. Still, the 2-disc set has a plan: Disc 1 is the smooth one, the yin to Disc 2's yang, which cuts and scratches with more edge and "street" experimentalism. Sometimes, the smooth and the edgy tangle up, like Sarah Jones' eyes-wide-open rhyme in DJ Vadim's otherwise sleepy "Your Revolution." Those looking for an introduction to such turntable jumbles would do well to start here. --Matthew Cooke

When one sets out to pay tribute to pornography, the task is a weird one. Is the Bacchanalian concept being heralded? The sex trade? The porn film tradition? Phone sex? When Howie B makes his nod to the porn industry, he merely rolls it all together, matching different sex vibes to different spots and different artists on this two-CD set. A persisting--really an undulating--moan is peppered throughout the set, giving it an uncertain erotic ambiance. But the compilation's eroticism is joined to the proverbial hip with porn's other constancy: voyeurism. Everything on the disc seems shrouded in beats and electronic atmospherics, with faint suggestions of sex emanating here and there. And because so much of the set is about suggestion and voyeurism, it's a fairly effective mood-setting ensemble. Ending this homage to porn is its most explicitly pornographic episode--and also the only tune to break the boundaries of musicality--the simple if tell-all dialogue of "Jenny Cum Lately" by Naked Funk. The song earns its chops by being something other than a song, a display of phone-sex verbal games that spare no details. It leaves the musical world behind, perhaps in astonishment of the blissful babble that takes the place of imagined-sex adventures. --Andrew Bartlett

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Welcome to the New Profundity. In the last several years, Ricardo Villalobos has emerged as one of the foremost producers in that Zone That Has No Name -- minimalism that's too rosy-cheeked to be minimal, techno too slinky (and dare we say: feminine) to be techno, house too adamantly anti-anthemic to be called house. On singles for Playhouse, Perlon, Frisbee Tracks and more, Villalobos -- both under his own name and as half of Ric Y Martin, alongside Martin Schopf (aka Dandy Jack) - has broken open techno's crank-case and reconfigured its motor to run on nothing but pebbles and honey, silicon and grass. Less minimalist than profoundly, proudly, regally restrained, his music is full of pauses, patience and white space; he overlaps genres until only their outlines remain, like a kind of subtractive synthesis used to blot out all but the essence of a given combination of tones. Which brings us to Alcachofa, an album that, like its namesake -- the humble artichoke -- peels away in layers, stripping back rubbery leaves to reveal a sweet, pulpy interior crowned by a halo of thorns. 'Easy Lee', the album's opener, is perversely delicious, pure dancefloor introversion. Graced by plangent, computer-modified vocals, the tune -- a staple in Richie Hawtin's afterhours sets -- is at once stark and darkly romantic, surface-bound and curiously hollowed, hyper-sexed and dead to the touch. It expands upon Villalobos' newfound interest in processed vocals, introduced with 'What You Say Is More Than I Can Say' on previous 12" Play 62 -- here in an edited version, which offsets rubberized techno stomp with delusional robot groans to produce a uniquely sensual disorientation. Not all of Alcachofa is so introverted, but most of it is marked by the same kind of restraint. Not hesitation: Villalobos knows just 'Theogenese' juggles South American syncopations, minimalist click-tracking, and 80s syn-drums, all suffused in a delicate sunrise aura, until every beat glows golden. 'Bahaha Hahi', traveling under a name suggesting some tropical imbalance, dresses up subconscious vocals in clicks and gurgles -- the sound of snorkeling while stoned. A simpler rhythmic experiment is 'I Try To Live (Can I Live)' an excursion into flattened-out funk and artificial mouth harp. But the record's crowning glory must be 'Dexter', which steadily cycles through a series of improbable chord changes like a cat prowling one of M.C. Eschers surreal staircases. Pensive, poignant, moving like water under ice, the track sucks you in and holds you deep in the heart of things -- and in the heart of Alcachofa. This isn't techno as we knew it; it's a biological experiment, a Petri dish of private elation and muttered damnations, a morphology of voices and tones and exhalations rubbed raw with salt and gravel. Alcachofa presents metamorphosis in play: restless, irrevocable. Wrapped in rubber, green and meaty, the world sounds different now."

This is the fourth album proper (discounting 1998's Sevens and Twelves) for the pioneering London-by-way-of-Putney post-rocktronic trio. Doing away for the most part with the sampled second-line beats and found textures prevalent on EPH, the etudes on Happiness work the band's collection of quasi-exotic instrumentation (kalimba, xylophone, and glockenspiel to name but three) through subtle digital reconstitution schemes, resulting in a far more intimate and inviting sound field. Cheeky song titles delineate the combinations: the blissed-out "Cut Up Piano and Xylophone" wisely works a reverse-skidding effect, unfortunately ending far before the listener can achieve the intended alpha-state; "Harmonics" strums open chords underneath an involved polyrhythmic pulse built out of sampled acoustic guitar picking; "Tone Guitar and Drum Noise," with its endlessly skidding percussion manages to hip-check Milford Graves and Augustus Pablo simultaneously (not an easy feat). The occasional detour (such as "Drums Bass Sonics and Edit") does little to destroy the reigning pastoral mood. Results overall are nothing short of gorgeous, the lengths gone to pierce a new angle through the rock-trio aegis ultimately pay off in a unique offering, contemporary and ages old. --Keith Fullerton Whitman
