Boisterous and unsubtle, the tunes found on the Benjamins soundtrack are filled with endless references to money. Mya calls it "Cream Cheese"; FT and the M.A.F.I.A. let us know they dream of getting "Money All the Time"; Puffy and crew claim "It's All About the Benjamins." The subject matter isn't exactly original, but it does go along with the paper-chasin' diamond-heist plot of the flick it supports. Benjamins leans heavily on previously released and well-known tunes like the O'Jays' classic "For the Love of Money" and BG's trendsetting anthem "Bling Bling," but there are a few gems waiting to be discovered, such as a lush remix of progressive hip-hop diva Mystic's "Destiny Complete," the down-and-dirty Southern growl of Trina's "I Told Y'all," and the playful, post-bop jazz styling of John Handy's "Hard Work." --Rebecca Levine

While it lacks some of the innocent charm of Pixar's similarly oceanic-themed Finding Nemo, Dreamworks' computer animated fish opera works from a more adult source, spoofing Coppola's The Godfather with an impressive array of all-star vocal talents. Its soundtrack may be one of the film's most consistently successful elements, a party-ready mix of contemporary r&b and hip-hop lite. Two of the highlights here are rooted in a 1970s disco groove: Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott take a slinky cruise through a beat-drenched take on "Car Wash," while Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real" is given a soul-pumped turn by Mary J. Blige (featuring a new rap break by star Will Smith and healthy samples of Lynn's original). Other standouts include fan 3's infectious "Digits," the pop-reggae inflected "Three Little Birds" by Sean Paul and Ziggy Marley, India Arie's dusky, seductive "Get It Together" and the Ludacris workout "Gold Digger." This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." Director Michael Apted's tale of the English code-breakers whose secretive, largely unheralded efforts contributed much to the Allied victory in World War II obviously had little use for a bombastic Hollywood action score. And while veteran John Barry has helped redefine the genre during his long association with the James Bond series, his brooding orchestral cues here (performed by members of the Concertgebouw Orchestra) serve to color an interior, largely cerebral story line. The composer's distinctive string arrangements have long been a Barry signature, and here their dolorous tones serve to conjure up an atmosphere of mounting intrigue and tension amid his trademark melancholy romanticism. If melody is not the driving concern, astute listeners may hear echoes of the sensibilities of Michael Nyman or Howard Shore's collaborations with David Cronenberg at work; more likely it's Barry's own dramatic--and widely influential--instincts coming full circle. --Jerry McCulley

The cast of Disney's 1999 television production of Annie reads like a who's who of Tony winners: Grace is played by Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Carousel, Master Class), Rooster is Alan Cumming (Cabaret), and Lily is Kristin Chenoweth (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown). Add Alicia Morton (Young Cosette in Broadway's Les Misérables) in the title role and Victor Garber (Sweeney Todd, Assassins) as Daddy Warbucks, and you have a cast that is refreshingly not driven by Hollywood box office, other than Kathy Bates as Miss Hannigan.

Resumés aside, how is the soundtrack? Well, McDonald might be a touch operatic and Garber a little young, but these are minor quibbles with a cast that is effective throughout (even Bates). Morton might not be the belter Andrea McArdle was in the original cast, but she's very good, and if anything the difference makes her sound like the little girl she is. Perhaps the best moment is McArdle--still sounding great at the ripe old age of 35--making a brief cameo as the star-to-be in "N.Y.C." Longtime fans of the show will notice that, in order to fit a two-hour prime-time window, the production had to leave out most of the historical context of the FDR administration ("A New Deal for Christmas," "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover"), as well as some other familiar numbers ("You Won't Be an Orphan for Long," "Annie"). This soundtrack is thus best considered a souvenir of the television production or a complement to, rather than a replacement for, the original cast recording. --David Horiuchi

Taking its cue from the soundtrack's fluke Joan Osborne hit, "One of Us," this is the film that dares ask "What if one of us--or Jim Carrey--were God?" While the comedy here makes Ace Ventura sound like Noel Coward, its soundtrack is an energetic, if pedestrian, mix of modern rock (Osborne, Plumb's "God-Shaped Hole," "You're a God" by Vertical Horizon) and electronica (Snap!'s ubiquitous "The Power", the kitsch-hop of Elvis Vs. JXL's "A Little Less Conversation," Fatboy Slim) that's as fluffy as it is friendly. This 1974 Norman Jewison film may have been a critical misstep, but some fans actually preferred it to Broadway's rock spectacle. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who's Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it's still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. This also includes the pretty "Could We Start Again, Please," composed for the stage version, and sung here by the original LP's Mary Magdalene, Yvonne Elliman. Ted Neely (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas), meanwhile, have spent two decades on the road, recreating their roles night after night, although they have to now be at least two decades older than Jesus was at the Crucifixion. --Bill Holdship

Except for the Dean Martin track that opens the set, the soundtrack of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau's second feature-length team-up couldn't be much more different than that of their first, the lounge-centric Swingers. Made's music, though, does celebrate living large, just as the earlier disc and its sequel did. From Dino to Underdogs' "Ain't Nothin' Wrong with That," an ode to "making cabbage [and] living lavish," these tunes are well suited to the streetwise Mafia farce. The hip-hop heart of the album leans more toward party fun (DJ Quik's "Do Whutcha Want," Nightmares on Wax's "Ease Jimi") and lighthearted sensuality (A Tribe Called Quest's "Electric Relaxation") than shoot-'em-up gangsta stuff--a wise move that both avoids the obvious and underscores the base innocence of the Vaughn and Favreau characters. --Rickey Wright

Until 1999, Craig Armstrong was best known for his production work alongside Massive Attack. But then, seemingly in one year, Armstrong created a name for himself as a soundtrack composer--and a good one at that. Plunkett & Macleane established his unique blend of symphonic and ambient elements in a score that defied categorization. On The Bone Collector, Armstrong has created another strong soundtrack in a similar vein. Don't expect the foreboding chill of Massive Attack's Blue Lines on this instrumental score, nor fast-and-furious breakbeats. Instead, Armstrong simply peppers his vast, slow-moving orchestral movements with the occasional turntable scratch or keyboard synth effects. The London Symphony Orchestra perform the bulk of this work, which sounds at times like Orff or Mahler made for the chill-out room at a rave. Good spies know when to dig deeper, and so do fans of good spy music. (The same goes for good cops.) So it may be that to enjoy Mission Accomplished, Too, you need to have a bit of a need to investigate enough to find the unexpected: the "funky people remix" of the theme from Starsky and Hutch by the James Taylor Quartet (no, not the vain guy), Rhythm Heritage's disco mix of the theme from S.W.A.T., and the theme from (ulp!) The New Avengers. There are plenty of surface gems that aren't common cuts, too: The Ventures' classic theme for Hawaii Five-O and their less-heard opening for The Streets of San Francisco, Quincy Jones's theme for Ironside, and Al Caiola's The Mod Squad. There are also deeper offerings from Lalo Schifrin (The Chelsea Memorandum, Bullitt) and Hugo Montenegro (The Invaders), and while it's not their best work, it's still plenty worth digging for. --Randy Silver

With an impressive roster from the country-music spectrum, the Nashville CD of music inspired by Prince of Egypt works as a compilation itself, if not as a compendium of the film. Fortunately, with a couple of exceptions, the producers steered away from "country pop" acts and concentrated on vocal talents like Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, and Wynonna. Wynonna's "Freedom" is a pleasant gospel workout, and Krauss's folky "I Give You to His Heart" is perhaps the compilation's best track, though Charlie Daniels's "Could It Be Me" is an upbeat frolic that actually has more of a feel for the film than any other track on the disc. "Make It Through" is a nicely written song, but Randy Travis isn't the man to sing it--his slow vocals seem outmatched by the upbeat song, and there isn't much flow. A handful of the tracks are overly sentimental, but, for the most part, this is a pleasant listen. --Aaron Tassano

Composing music for a Robert Redford movie is a good thing. Ordinary People made Pachelbel's Canon in D a mainstream hit. The Milagro Beanfield War won Dave Grusin an Oscar for his charming score, and A River Runs Through It nabbed a nomination for Mark Isham's popular themes. Thomas Newman's score for Redford's adaptation of Nicholas Evans's bestseller relates well to the leisurely paced, nearly three-hour horse drama: it's never complicated. The rhythms of Big Sky country are introduced in a warble of strings in Newman's score and never overstay their welcome. Newman's dexterity in building various layers is more apparent in his scores for The Player and The People Vs. Larry Flynt, but those are more acidic movies (and scores). Most of the film's country-music sting originates with the songs that are available on a separate soundtrack album. There's more fluidity on this CD and, at nearly an hour of music, the disc lets Newman's score ease over you. --Doug Thomas

The directing debut of Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace adapts the Alexandre Dumas classic for Leonardo di Caprio and--well, at least it doesn't hit an iceberg. The first full score by sometime Hans Zimmer collaborator Glennie-Smith is one of those instances of a composer outwitting his film material. A mixture of light dance-pop, innocuous romantic ballads, and "Eye of the Tiger" drama keeps things moving. G-rated through and through, the disc's nonstop chirpiness might eventually wear on parents' ears even as they acknowledge the catchy hooks. After the success of their score for The Little Mermaid, the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken returned to Disney for their second fairy-tale adaptation. Sadly, it was the duo's last completed score before Ashman's untimely death at age 41. This soundtrack contains more-conventional show music than The Little Mermaid, owing in large part to Broadway stalwart Angela Lansbury and to Jerry Orbach's Yves Montand impersonation. Most of the songs here were included in the subsequent Broadway adaptation and its cast album, but this disc is superior in its studio polish and cast, which is better suited to the score. --John Sanchez

Kings Mob Productions brought together a diverse team of collaborators to build the thunderous, pulverizing score that complements THREAT's nihilistic vision. With this "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," THREAT's writer-director Matt Pizzolo, score contributor Alec Empire, and score composer Queque have distilled the film's soundscape into the anthemic hardcore punk, twisted breakbeats, and guttural metalcore that drives THREAT's furious story. Empire's "Night Of Violence" sets the tone of the album (and the film): unbridled, unapologetic rage. Most of the songs featured on this soundtrack will already be seared in the minds of anyone who's seen the film, with blistering tracks like Atari Teenage Riot's "Start The Riot" and Terror's "Overcome" so potently incorporated in key moments of the story. Fans of Jim and Mekky's doomed love story will also appreciate the inclusion of memorable brooders "Drone" by Eyes Like Knives (whose Rebekka Takamizu plays Mekky in the film) and "heVn" by Queque. But it is the disturbingly appropriate finale of Atari Teenage Riot covering Sham69's seminal "Kids Are United" that truly demonstrates this album is not a corporate merchandising effort like so many soundtracks, but rather another level to the movie, passionately honed by the film's creators... enjoyable on its own but absolutely indispensable to any fan of the film.

The success of the original Halloween launched six sequels, a ravenous decade's worth of imitators, and Hollywood careers for star Jamie Lee Curtis and director John Carpenter. But its budget was a micro one, and director Carpenter managed to save a few bucks by hiring the same composer he'd worked with since his days as a student and struggling indie--himself. Borrowing the staccato rhythmic devices of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells cum Exorcist score, Carpenter overlaid them with a few simple Grand Guignol-esque synth chords and created nothing less than a surprisingly enduring horror classic. Carpenter also gleaned a few hints from Italian prog-rock horror-score kings Goblin, imbuing his simple, synthesizer-based cues with an almost subconscious sense of dread, tension, and impending doom. If the music has become something of a modern cliché, that's only a testament to its continued ability to strike terror in the hearts of listeners. --Jerry McCulley

We knew Thomas Newman was versatile (he's created gripping soundtracks for everything from The Shawshank Redemption to Desperately Seeking Susan), but his score for American Beauty is simply gorgeous and one of his best. Filled with inventive instrumentation--tablas, bird calls, dulcimer, banjo, ukulele, detuned mandolin, and more--the score varies between highly rhythmic, world-music influenced passages ("Dead Already," "Lunch with the King") and the more subdued ("Mr. Smarty-Man," "American Beauty"). Throughout, Newman's score is inventive and a great complement to the dark comedy's numerous mood swings. The movie's other soundtrack--a collection of memorable alt-rock tracks--gave us just a sampling of this score. Here's the rest. It's short (37 minutes) but sweet. --Jason Verlinde

It seems an easy task to put together a CD for a series about a funeral home...pick some songs about death and make people smirk on topic for a moment before they toss it into the soundtrack graveyard. But this is not a disc to be tossed away. Six Feet Under: Everything Ends is a collection of music that feels exactly like the series: a floaty-bordering-on-surreal batch of greatness. The disc starts off with an underrated track from Nina Simone, the sultry "Feeling Good." Fans of Coldplay and Radiohead will certainly be familiar with their previously-released tunes ("A Rush of Blood to the Head" and "Lucky" respectively) but the best element of this disc is that it gives lesser-known, musically-similar artists a push. After all, finding Death Cab For Cutie's "Transatlanticism" and Sia's fragile "Breathe Me" on pop radio is, well...let's stick to the theme and use the "snowball's chance in hell" analogy. There are a host of great, previously unreleased and exclusive tracks on this CD: Jem's Dido-esque "Amazing Life," the Caesars' "Don't Fear The Reaper" cover, Interpol's discordant and dark "Direction" and Arcade Fire's wonderful "Cold Wind"--a whispered, frail, and beautiful soundscape, perfect to watch hearses off drive into sunsets by. The Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic cartoons may not have been great works of cinema, but they did break some ground in the early '70s inasmuch as they were adult-oriented animated features with controversial sexual content. Not much rock & roll, though, on the soundtracks, which combined typical early-'70s instrumental soul-jazz pieces with a few oldies and incidental music. Previously issued as two separate LPs, this CD reissues combines both of them onto one disc. Ace. 2003.

This is an excellent soundtrack piece produced and arranged by George Clinton. The tracks include a mix of military-style songs with heroic drumbeats, and songs with exotic Eastern instrument influencial, all proving to produce some catchy vibes.

This collection has a split personality. On one side, there's the youth Moment, led by 12-year-old Aaron Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boy Nick, No Authority, and Jessica Simpson. On the other side, there are the established artists, who are true surprises. Sinead O'Connor? Cyndi Lauper? Isaac Hayes? So, it's a battle between bouncy pop with its hyperextended beats and clear skin and the ragged tone of world-worn former heroes. Things begin with a surprisingly mellow track from TLC's Tionne T-Boz Watkins (perhaps she can't figure which side of the fence to choose here). From there, the beats step up, and Aaron Carter, Baha Men, and Jessica Simpson all deliver the kinds of catchy tunes you expect. Sinead O'Connor hasn't abandoned her sententious beginnings. Even with the addition of hip-hop beats and a few random electronic noises, she still sounds as solemn as ever, whispering and singing softly. Former Spice Girl Gerri Halliwell updates Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots" without adding or subtracting much. A better novelty is Cyndi Lauper performing "I Want a Mom That Will Last Forever," a sentimental tune perfectly suited for her emotive reach. --Rob O'Connor
