Tune in for the latest installment in the ongoing "Son of the Wu" saga, Tical 0: The Prequel, in which Method Man finds himself in a particularly awkward position. One gets the sense that it was a battle between Mista Mef and Def Jam for the soul of this album and that the label won. Meth's third solo outing radiates a blatantly commercial vibe that risks alienating die-hard Wu-Tang Clan fans, yet it contains just enough hot selections to grab the less judgmental listener's interest. And the hot selections are really what we're here for, right? Surprisingly, the album's many guest appearances provide the most excitement. A newly Def Jam-affiliated Puff Daddy produces and comperes the Missy-accented "Say What," Raekwon injects some old-school Wu flavor into "The Turn," and Busta Rhymes straight kills it with a full-throttle assault on "What's Happenin'." Even longtime Wu-Tang sidekick, Streetlife, adds some nice touches to tracks like "The Prequel." At least Meth's kept his friends close during this transitional period. --Rebecca Levine

Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF Doom hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD's 1994 sophomore album Black Bastards was turfed by Elektra in 1994 and Subroc (one half of the sibling rhyme duo) passed away, surviving KMD member Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF Doom. The rap world is better for it. This 19-cut, deep LP is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, "Rhymes Like Dimes," Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting "only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct." Doomsday features female vocalist Pebbles the Invisible accompanying the masked rhyme avenger on his journey to denounce wack MCs, while on "?" he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on "Tick, Tick..." where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, many of which include snippets of dialogue from Marvel's Dr. Doom series, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial rap universe, Operation Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy. --Dalton Higgins

Soundtrack is the first of its kind: an original, artist-composed score crafted to the beat of polyurethane pounding pavement. Anticon veteran producer and beatsmith Odd Nosdam tailors each song to fit the style and cadence of the Element rider it accompanies. And on its own, quite simply, this album is a banger. From its opening moments, the T.I.M.E. Soundtrack menaces thump-driven destruction. T.I.M.E. sports an ominous SP1200-crunched beat that stomps into the fore like Godzilla into Nagasaki, while Nosdam's trademark pops and quirks flit overhead. The Chad Muska-inspired Trunk Bom aggressively boom-baps its way to rhythmic bliss via chopped breaks and arpeggiated synth, while Fly Mode (co-produced by Jel and fashioned after the fluid stylings of Brent Atchley) is a loping, folksy instrumental that blows through like a summer breeze. Soundtrack, Nosdam's approach--decidedly upbeat, mobile, and spontaneous--cements the guitar-driven rollick of We Bad Apples to the funky minimalism of Zone Coaste; to the sweet toughness of Ethereal Slap. Elsewhere Nosdam proves his hand at big and grimey (Cop Crush for Bam Margera), melodic and gorgeous (Root Bark for Mike Barker, also co-produced by Jel), and heaving and stoney (One For Dallas for Levi Brown). Top Rank leaks in like steam over lo-bit guitars and a warm dubby bounce designed for child prodigy Nyjah Huston, then morphs into a slow-pulsing, textured epic just as apt for rolling--by board or by car--through any concrete jungle. But the second-to-last track Wig Smasher conceived for Tony Tave, sends the T.I.M.E. Soundtrack soaring to the stratosphere. The slow burn of steady organ builds and builds from a bedrock of record static, ambient fuzz, skittering drums and 808 bass, culminating in a five-alarm blaze of beat-driven sound collage. It's an anthemic near-end to a larger-than-life song cycle.

Project English doesn't contain an instantly recognizable chartbuster like "Back That Azz Up" or "Ha" from the 400 Degreez album, but that's not even the issue here. Like Master P and the No Limit camp before him, Juvenile and his Cash Money clique's fame clock will continue to run at 14:57 (and counting) until he diversifies his sound and subject matter. The reggae-tinged "Sunshine" repositions Juvenile and his crew as rap innovators, introducing listeners to some new slum slanguage ("sunshining" is a "bling, bling"-like slang term for jewelry). "Mamma Got Ass" is another notable yet unintentionally comedic tune where Juvenile explains how genetics influence the big bums he fancies. "Set It Off" and "Get Your Hustle On," meanwhile, contain the in-your-face misogyny and materialism that bog down portions of the release. On "My Life," Juvenile's fictional storytelling shines through as he crafts an action-filled tale of rising up from rags to bitches, er...riches. Ultimately, the lack of outside producers holds back Project English. Cash Money Records' in-house knob-twiddler Mannie Fresh's creative wellspring is running dry; the drum programming and keyboard stylings in the second half of the album start to sound way too familiar. In the end, "White Girl" (a metaphor for crack cocaine) is the kind of electrofunk with smart rhymes that will remind the Cash Money constituency why they should continue to buy Juvenile's albums. --Dalton Higgins

Four years after "Jump"-ing their way into a hugely successful kiddie rap ride, it was clear the two Chrises who make up Kriss Kross (17-year-old Chris Kelly and 16-year-old Chris Terry) were only as young, rich, and dangerous as their writer, producer, and mentor, Atlantan Jermaine Dupri, wanted them to be. Still calling all the shots--even penning most of his young proteges' raps about themselves--Dupri's third Kriss Kross album attempted to lay the groundwork for the teens' entry into a prosperous hip-hop adulthood.

Though Young, Rich & Dangerous offers a slim eight songs and only about a half-hour of music, Dupri makes good use of his time with a mellow keyboard-laced and bass-heavy groove so smooth it credibly recreates Dr. Dre and Snoop's original west coast G-funk with a (mostly) PG-13 attitude. A handful of the cuts, including the title track, "Live and Die For Hip Hop," and especially the hit party single "Tonite's tha Night," glide on the hooks and melodies created with help from Trey Lorenz's and Aaliyah's R&B vocals and guest-raps from pint-sized homegirl Da Brat. The boys of Kriss Kross do their part by delivering a postpubescent tag team flow that combines the swagger of youth with the surety of seasoned professionals. And with "Money, Power, and Fame" and "Hey Sexy"--two tracks the duo wrote, produced, and perform without Dupri's input--they even assert a small measure of independence. Mix Master Mike is a world-champion turntable battler, and it shows on his debut recording. The first half is full of furious high-energy scratching, complete with cartoon imagery and bratty jokes; it's an old-school hip-hop party that takes place in the Beastie Boys' 'hood. It's entirely appropriate that Mike, one of San Francisco's famed Invisibl Skratch Piklz, contributes to three tracks on the Beasties' Hello Nasty and replaces DJ Hurricane in their live show; they share a manic energy. But the second half of Anti-Theft Device offers some smoother, contemplative tracks--it's on par with the dense introspection of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... but with more flow and less virtuoso scratching. You know how they say "You can't have it all?" Well, the Fugees have come remarkably close to turning that truism on its head. The Score is the complete hip-hop album for the mid '90s. On one hand, their eclectic musical and lyrical points of reference posit them in the De La Soul/Basehead organic school, but they hold fiercely to the braggadocio/"sucka MC" tradition that is at the roots of rap. While the threesome are on the conscious tip, they avoid the clichés that weigh down the protests of so many of their overbearing, off-centric brethren. All those skirmishes between the hip-hop and R&B camps are blithely brushed aside by the Fugees, who jack up Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly with His Song." --Steven Stolder

Bouncing back from the deplorably mediocre Beneath the Surface, GZA reasserts his position at the head of the Wu-Tang corpus. The most obvious improvement is in the production, masterminded by various Wu-Tang acolytes of RZA's dissonant funkalistics. Beats are kept simple--one- and two-bar loops sampled from across the musical spectrum--but despite their austerity, they're impressively efficient sonic packages that complement GZA's own powerfully compact lyrical style. The self-proclaimed "ill rhyme kicker / with no parental sticker" rolls with almost nonstop braggadocio on the album, flashing his virtuosity with metaphorically inspired songs like "Fame" and "Animal Planet" and wordplay parties such as "Knock, Knock" and "Sparring Minds." The album's main liability is that it's consistent to a fault. The 15 tracks begin to sound like variations on one another and, despite the individual qualities of any given song, the overall album begins to get monotonous halfway through. --Oliver Wang

With the exception of one new track--the cynically titled "One for the $," by the Sugarhill Gang and Melle Mel--and some commentary by Ice-T and Public Enemy's Chuck D, there's nothing on The Showdown that can't be found on other collections. The Showdown also skips some important classics--"The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" and Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five's "Beat Street" among them. Those quibbles aside, this collection does achieve its goals: by showcasing the Sugarhill Gang--who emphasized the party groove from which rap came--and the extended Grandmaster Flash family--who saw themselves as social messengers (pun intended)--side by side, the album brings to light the pair's differences and groundbreaking creativity. Everything super-producer Dr. Dre touches turns into the platinum that Juvenile rocks in his grill; white gold, at minimum. Yet, interestingly, Man vs. Machine is an example of what happens when rap's finest talents go superstar collabo-hunting: the magic remains just where it started--on paper. Do Eminem's verbal jabs at Jermaine Dupri on "My Name" add anything to the Xzibit mix? Nope. And is that Dr. Dre producing the beats of a mere mortal on the Nate Dogg-assisted "Multiply"? Absolutely. Conceptually, "Release Date," a provocative first-person look at what goes through a prison inmate's mind just before being discharged, showcases what you'd come to expect from an Xzibit track: rugged beats, even nastier rhymes. However, the track's production by the much-fêted Rockwilder is an afterthought. So clearly, when the X-man sticks to his growling flows over purist beats by DJ Premier ("What a Mess"), or with the similarly gritty M.O.P. ("BK to LA"), the results are splendid. But with Dre and company on board, X seems to lose some of his focus and organic luster. Put in perspective, Xzibit's fourth release is arguably better than most of the West Coast pabulum out this year. The Simple Twist of Fate CD had its genesis several months ago, when Dave's True Story was invited to play the annual DylanFest at a winery in upstate NY. The assignment was simple--the repertoire must be all-Dylan. The band members (Kelly Flint: vocals, Dave Cantor: guitar, and Jeff Eyrich: standup bass) picked their favorite Dylan songs and went to work on transforming them into the Dave's True Story style. Just before going onstage Dave commented, "either we're going to be tarred, feathered and run out of town for taking liberties, or they're going to love it." The audience apparently loved it, as there were many requests afterward from people to "buy the CD." The band had a great time doing it, so the next week they convened at Bennett Studios in New Jersey and recorded their Dylan program, including "Simple Twist of Fate," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "I Want You," "Just Like a Woman," "You're a Big Girl Now," "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," and a classic Dave rendition of "If Dogs Run Free."

After catching heat for 2002's disappointing Masquerade, Wyclef Jean jiggered his "ecleftic" formula a bit; this time he's come closer to hitting the mark. Listeners will be pretty hard-pressed to find much actual rapping on The Preacher's Son, but the former Fugee does a good job showcasing a wide variety of musical genres, all crafted with the highest of production values. Tracks like "Baby Daddy" (an ode to step-fatherhood featuring Redman) and "Next Generation" (featuring Rah Digga and the always tight Scarface) give a brief nod to Clef's MC status while "Party to Damascus" (a duet with the ubiquitous Missy Elliott) helps bridge the gap between traditional and next-wave hip-hop. But the eclectic roster of non-MC guests proves that Wyclef's musical vision is bigger than hip-hop. Yes, the 1996 reunion album Home Again rocked, but it wasn't quite the tour de force everyone was expecting. That's because what was so great about New Edition was their irresistible blend of bubblegum pop and sweet soul, the kind responsible for hits like "Popcorn Love" and "Candy Girl" (guided, of course, by the hand of producer Maurice Starr, who went on to recycle these songs for white-bread clones New Kids on the Block). Included here is also the song that inspired Boyz II Men's name, and one of the prototypical new-soul ballads, "Can You Stand the Rain." "Count Me Out" and "Cool it Now" are bundles of fun, but not nearly as fun as simply hearing those voices at their tender beginnings. Kool Keith, aka Black Elvis, Dr. Octagon, Poppa Large, Dr. Dooom, and about a dozen personae, got his start with the Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC's in the mid-1980s. Although revered, their recordings made little commercial impact and the group disbanded. Since then Keith has enigmatically swung from project to project, maintaining a deliberately inscrutable cloak of aliases and alter egos. The result is a catalog that is high in concept, broad in scope, and completely, utterly wacky: it's hip-hop as Darius James writes novels and Terry Gilliam makes films. Only a few other artists--Definition of Sound and Divine Styler most notably--have ever come close to achieving similar results. Judging from the results of this recording, one of Keith's more straight-ahead, more rappers should try. On Lost, Keith's rhymes are unpredictable, obscure, and hilarious. On "Static," he somehow rhymes Benjamins with basketball star Scottie Pippen, (ex-NFL quarterback Mark) Rypien, and 1960s boxing champ Sonny Liston; elsewhere he namechecks 1970s journeymen basketballers Darnell Hillman and Slick Watts. He's critical of hip-hop pretension on many tracks, most notably "I Need a Release Date." Although the recording features a solid, contemporary bounce, Keith is completely old school--it's his whimsical words and unique delivery that matter most. --Martin Johnson

The nickel-nine spitter, Royce Da 5'9" is back with The Album, the brand new studio album from M.I.C. Records and Traffic Entertainment. Royce is most known for the 2000 single "Boom," a DJ Premier-produced street banger or for his appearance on the Willa Ford hit, "I Wanna Be Bad"; however, he earned his rhyming stripes through his affiliations with Eminem and Dr. Dre. A fellow Detroit native, Royce was first introduced to Eminem while Slim Shady was selling his EP at a rap show and the two soon formed the rap duo Bad Meets Evil (Royce played the role of the Bad side). The Album follows up on 2007's The Bar Exam with 13 tracks and guest verses from Talib Kweli and Raekwon and production by 9th Wonder, Notz, Green Lantern, and more. Someone needs have a talk with talented emcee Beanie Sigel--you know, the Beanie who blazed that "and...'em" punctuated verse on "Adrenaline" from the Roots' Things Fall Apart--because he's nowhere to be found on this album. While Sigel's debut, The Truth, contained thought-inducing head-nodders like "What Your Life Like" that forewarned listeners of the pitfalls of partaking in illegal subterranean activities, he's taken an odious U-turn on Gangster Ave. On "Watch Your Bitch Ass" Sigel celebrates exploiting women and flipping keys, and this trend carries on throughout his 14-track effort. Sadly, a good chunk of the beats, looped samples, and hooks that accompany this narrow subject matter are rehashed and equally uninspiring. "So What You Sayin'" features Sigel and label mate Memphis Bleek covering the EPMD classic of the same name for no good reason. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! On "Man's World," producer No I.D. employs one of the most overused James Brown-sampled records, while "Beanie (Mack Bitch)" and "Gangsta Gangsta" lift hooks from annoyingly familiar Dr. Dre NWA hits of the past. On the other hand, The Reason begins and ends with arguably two of the better cuts on the album, so you're not left completely hanging. On "Nothing Like It," Sigel's seeds take center stage and are touted as the reasons for him wanting to become a better Beanie man, while the album's closer "What Your Life Like 2" takes listeners on a graphic trip through the psyche of a prisoner. Guest appearances by Scarface ("Mom Praying") and Jay-Z ("Still Got Love for You") keep things interesting because on both tracks Sigel makes clear the impact his parents have had on his life--both the good and bad. But in the end, The Reason further solidifies Sigel's position in the rap world as an underachieving rapper who's on the right Roc-A-Fella career train, but aboard the wrong tracks. --Dalton Higgins

Despite the album's title, the only thing extreme about this CD is how masterful the laconic rapper is in the art of lounging. Houston's king of chill singsongs his way through a languid haze of weed smoke and booty calls, offering 17 tracks of icy coolness. Impressively, the entire album slouches along at the same, easy tempo: this isn't for the dance floor but the after-party. A range of producers (D-Boy, Domo, Cory Mo, and others) deserve credit for keeping the vibe ultra-smooth, soulful, and slinky. Devin is perfect with that kind of groove, and he spends most of his time kicking verses about smoking out and chasing women. It's not always the deepest content, though songs like "Briarpatch" and the anti-police anthem, "Go Fight Some Other Crime," show off his subversive side. --Oliver Wang
