Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the United States, where the bulk of his prolific output has until now been available only through the import bins. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres.

This is the first full-length release for Yore Records by Detroit house legend Rick Wade. The Good, the Bad and the Deep finds Wade continuing his very own deep strain of late-night house music he has been drawing upon since 1991, while still keeping his feet in the future. In fact, when the artist, DJ, and label head (Harmonie Park and Bass Force) sprinkles a little Chain Reaction dust over the funky handclapping swing of "Prime Expansion," Wade acknowledges a relatively recent style before shifting the spotlight back to his preferred territory. Wade naturally references techno and house but also pulls classic disco, smooth jazz, funk, and Philly soul into its expansive orbit. One hears traces of Barry White in the soulful strings that sometimes course through Wade's steaming tracks, Gamble and Huff in the sparkling arrangements, and The Crusaders' Joe Sample in the Rhodes flourishes that caress the grooves. Following an intro of soft chords, triangle, and congas, "Focus" achieves lift-off when the beats kick in, after which Wade sweetens the deal with twilight synth colors and silken strings. A smooth jazz spirit infuses "Xavi" with a feathery sax motif and a springy bass line buoying a sleek disco-funk pulse. "Hustler's Den" bridges three decades in a single gesture -- the cut's pounding stomp is overlaid by a see-sawing Rhodes motif and a '70s-styled bass slap, which are then joined by horn accents and a soaring string line. Wade's tracks are rich with detail but their essence is first and foremost groove. The Good, the Bad, and the Deep also features vocals on the last track by Marissa G. (Marissa Guzman). This eight-track set impresses as a polished portrait of the artist and should not be missed.

This first appearance is when Melodium's music perked the ears of Audio Dregs founders E*Vax. This is the much admired, somewhat groovy and extremely experimental Messe Pour Le Temps Present from french composer Pierre Henry - one of the pioneers of the music concrete movement. Recorded in 1967, Messe Pour Le Temps Present was originally scored for a Maurice Bejart ballet, Henry being an ardent admirer of the french choreographers work. Messe Pour Le Temps Present was one of a handful of collaborations with Bejart and Pierre Henry even travelled the world as sound engineer with Bejart's group. The first five tracks of this CD are really nice and groovy (with some cool electronics thrown in!) and the rest, as you can expect from one of the original exponents of music concrete, is very experimental. Echospace is the collaborative venture of DeepChord's Rod Modell and Soultek's Steve Hitchell, and this is their first full-length release on the Modern Love label. Detroit's Rod Modell is one of the most noted producers operating in the dub-infused aftermath of the Basic Channel axis and all its myriad offshoots. His series of 12"s on his own eponymous imprint were released at the tail-end of the '90s and the beginning of the new century, and are considered by many as the natural progression from the effervescent, super-dense techno of Berlin's Chain Reaction. Following an extended hiatus, Rod Modell has re-wired his studio again and is once again receiving great acclaim for his low-end techno variations. Chicago's Steve Hitchell is a longtime DeepChord cohort and a noted producer in his own right -- most notably under the Soultek moniker. Alongside apple-cheeked watercolor paintings of infants, the original cover design for the Soothing Sounds series of records bore the charming inscription, "An Infant's Friend in Sound." Composer Harry Warnow was already legendary (as "Raymond Scott") for his whimsical electronic and big-band novelty musics. With this 1962-63 series, Scott turned his astonishing array of invented and modified keyboards and recording techniques toward pure electronic music with an infant-friendly spin. Intended as "aural toys" for the nursery, Soothing Sounds' deceptively simple "tic-tocs" and unthreatening seesaw melodies play on the calming properties of repetition--much like music boxes, Fisher-Price's mobiles, and the comforting "Again!" video mentality of the Teletubbies. Despite endorsement from the Gesell Institute of Child Development, the records sold poorly. But they had a curious afterlife, prefiguring such "adult" descendents as ambient music ("invented" by Brian Eno in 1975) and the mechanical pop-tronic textures of Kraftwerk and Gary Numan. --Gil Gershman

In 1947 Artaud created this piece (which roughly translates into 'To Have Done With God's Judgment') for radio which is presented here and is perhaps his ultimate work. What is issued here is the complete broadcast including texts performed in the most phenomenal manner by Artaud himself and strange trance-like music. Artaud would die a few months after this recording. It comes with an important introduction by Marc Dachy, who puts things in their historical perspective. Mississippi label Fat Possum has done much for the fusion of blues and another distinctly African American music, hip-hop, but this project sounds forced and phony. R.L. Burnside's elegant and trippy Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down and the compilation New Beats from the Delta both team urban Southern MCs with the label's crusty bluesmen and sound gritty and first-rate. But this meandering, formless sonic splatter painting is terrible, despite its expert cast.

Guitarist Skip McDonald, bassist Doug Wimbish, drummer Keith LeBlanc, and producer Adrian Sherwood are electronica pioneers, the guts of the band Tackhead, and sparkplugs for recordings by Ministry, African Head Charge, and Dub Syndicate. They have a grounding in funk, reggae, and rock that's given their earlier meta-music a human streak. So it's surprising there's almost no soul here. Gliding slide guitars, samples of black voices, and harmonica lines float through the mix, sliding against pumped snare drums, echo-treated cymbals, and programming. At best, in "Run Here Boy" and the rambling narrative "Blues Story II," the CD's nearest stabs at cohesive songs, a simmering, brooding mood rises, but it's broken by intrusions of dub effects, chanting, and glossolalia. What we hear are the signifiers of blues and none of its substance, mated with listless, shambling, ambient grooves. --Ted Drozdowski

This reissue of pioneering electronic artist Synergy is an interesting and entertaining mix. Audion opens with "Orbit Five," layering melodic runs and chords over percussion for a very progressive-rock result. "Terminal Hotel," a slow, heavily rhythmic piece with an atmospheric opening, is full of the cinematic drama that Synergy is famous for. There are several orchestral-sounding pieces as well, making one wonder what would happen if, for instance, the London Symphony took on the anthemic "After the Earthquake," the classically structured "Falcons and Eagles," or "Flight of the Looking Glass," which mixes classical and pop sensibilities. Knowing that Audion was originally recorded before the age of digital synthesis makes the results all the more impressive. --Genevieve Williams

Maurice Sendak's influential children's book Where the Wild Things Are is given its second classical music treatment on this disc (an opera by Oliver Knussen is also available). Composer Randall Woolf's score for the American Repertory Ballet is filled with oddball touches and hints of jazz and funk. Voices heard through synthesizers add to the sonic strangeness, typically ending a track with the distorted sounds of a scolding parent. But for all the genre-fusing going on here, there are also gorgeous passages; the minimalism found in the electric-violin passage during "Max gets homesick and departs" is convincing, as is the nervous energy on track two ("Max misbehaves"). Images from the children's book and the ballet production grace the liner notes. This may be a far cry from Swan Lake, but fans of Sendak or modern ballet should check out this fun music. --Jason Verlinde

Radian is at the center of a very fertile and exciting musical scene in Vienna. Critics are citing it as one of the most adventurous and important movements taking place, much like the free jazz movement in 70's Chicago, the no-wave movement in 80's NYC, and the garage/jungle movement in 90's London. Seeking to draw lines of connection from Kraftwerk to Derrick May, Afrika Bambaataa to Aphrodite, Modulations was an insightful stab at a concise, overarching viewpoint. On Early Modulations: Vintage Volts, the lens is focused further into the past, focusing on electronic music experimentation from the '50s and '60s. The musicians featured on this collection, like Pierre Schaeffer and Luc Ferrari, were pioneers of the genre who composed long before the invention of personal computers, sequencers, and samplers. Many of these musicians are obscure to the casual fan, but some of the music represented here made a huge impact on top composers to follow--John Cage's "Imaginary Landscape No. 1" and Morton Subotnick's "Silver Apples of the Moon" influenced everyone from Philip Glass to Mixmaster Morris. Three years after the release of Naada, retrospectively, Yoshio Machida compiled his steelpan live recordings in Europe and Japan from 2001 to 2008. Machida's music has been already as known as his CD trilogy "Hypernatural" series, TV spot in France and in DJ Spooky's Rhythm Science. Influenced by Indian improvised traditional music, for his first tour in Europe in 2002, he made original "un-equal temperament" tuned steelpan by himself. It sounds like Gamelan gong. And he performed steelpan with Max/MSP realtime processing for getting drone sound (like tampura in Indian music) from his steelpan sound. After several endeavors for expressing "live" music with complicated and real time computer processing, he started to play only acoustic steelpan to realize microtparticulation texture that like computer generated, without computer. This album shows the trail. Reminiscent of Harold Budd's ambient piano, Fennesz's glitches, Improvisors...
