Newcomer Kellie Coffey arrives in Nashville not straight from her Oklahoma home, but via Los Angeles, where she scored a number of jobs singing background for Disneyland, network television, and Barbra Streisand’s millennium album and Las Vegas show. It’s no surprise, then, that she chose a pop producer, Dann Huff, for her debut CD, which is marketed as a country album but has little more than the occasional twang of pedal steel guitar to make it so. This is a big, layered, usually overproduced effort, made memorable by Coffey’s Trisha Yearwood-like vocals and her impressive songwriting. "When You Lie Next to Me," the title ballad, boasts a strong lyric about appreciating the intimacy of a lover and respecting the fragility of life. Like others of her songs, particularly "At the End of the Day" and "Outside Looking In," a duet with Lonestar’s Richie McDonald, "When You Lie Next to Me" has a kind of integrity that cuts through the gloppy production and remains something special. Here’s hoping that Coffey, something special herself, can keep her head above the muck. --Alanna Nash

Whatever you say about alternative country, don't call it "underground"--not since the "movement" has now received K-Tel's (mixed) blessing. Hard-core fans will find Exposed Roots redundant, but for those curious about alt country, this compilation is not a bad buffet to sample. The two-disc set is most interesting for the particular vision it presents of the wanna-be genre, though many of the choices seem questionable. The inclusion of lesser-known acts like the Handsome Family and Lambchop is adventurous--and rewarding--but does anyone really think Marlee MacLeod is more important to the development of the scene than Uncle Tupelo? There's nothing here from Tupelo, or any of their St. Louis kin. And the token nods to Gram Parsons ("In My Hour of Darkness") and Johnny Cash (does anyone need another recording of "Folsom Prison Blues"?) should've been omitted, because their inclusion only makes the absence of other forerunners painfully obvious. But most offensive is "See Right Through" from Tangletown--a band that nobody knows, included presumably because their 1999 debut album is also distributed by K-Tel. Buy the compilation if only for the liner notes by No Depression editors Peter Blackstock and Grant Alden, who provide a serviceable map to the dozens of albums by the bands heard here. --Anders Smith-Lindall

The folk revival frequently takes a lot of heat from bluegrass experts. When a younger urban audience and their ethnomusicologist guides began discovering and drawing attention to established bluegrass artists in the '50s, they sometimes proffered a distorted folk purism to the music--and that can rankle hardcore bluegrassers. Yet without the folk revival, bands as seminal as the Country Gentlemen would not exist--in fact, one of the band's earliest singles was a reworking of the best-known folk-revival performance: the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley." This four-disc box set collects the most energetic and groundbreaking work of the classic Country Gentleman ensemble--Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray--as well as the equally great, early-'70s lineup of Waller, Bill Emerson, Bill Yates, and Doyle Lawson. A native of Australia whose years in the U.S. have not affected her irresistibly charming accent one bit, Russell is eager to clue Stateside country fans in on a little secret: that barbecues and the contemporary kind of country music she makes are just as popular Down Under as they are in the United States.

Russell draws upon a unique array of influences in creating her distinctive musical sound. She uses the phrase "Keith Urban meets Bonnie Raitt" to best describe her blend of Aussie style, soulful vocals, insightful and emotional songwriting and accomplished musicianship. Powerful Stuff was produced in Los Angeles with Rich Mouser, who has worked with artists like Oleander, Tears For Fears, Dream Theatre, and did tracks for the American Pie 2 soundtrack, with additional production by Clyde Brooks in Nashville. Brooks, who has worked with Curb and Polygram with such artists as Ronna Reeves and Perfect Stranger, is an accomplished Nashville studio drummer with over 6,000 sessions to his credit, including dates with Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakum, George Jones and Little Richard.

"Kate is an artist who brings soul and lyrical imagery to everything that she sings," Brooks says. "She is an eclectic singer/songwriter who approaches her artistry from a standpoint of integrity. It has been a pleasure to work with her both musically and personally."

Drawing an analogy between songwriting and another longtime passion of hers, surfing (which she once considered turning into a professional career), Russell says, "Surfing is a composition all on its own. It's about watching a wave and designing how you're going to ride it. There's nothing quite like the freedom of surfing on a day that's clear - the sun, the water. It's a peaceful place to be."

McCann possesses a sweet, exuberant, full-throated voice that's vaguely reminiscent of a de-twanged pubescent Reba McEntire. On Something in the Air, McCann's second album, she usually sounds more callow than convincing when she tries to tackle "grown-up" themes--and producer Mark Spiro's generic arrangements don't help much. But McCann shines when she stays within her emotional comfort zone on songs such as "Kiss Me," which deals with the fumbling anxiety of that very first teenage lip-lock, and "Crush," which takes a surprisingly clear-eyed look at the temporary insanity of adolescent infatuation. "I Will Be" is an especially lovely song that earnestly and movingly expresses the hopes and fears of growing up. Though it's hard to doubt the faith or fault the selection on Alabama's first album of religious inspiration--and first release of new recordings in more than five years--the arrangements range from the heavenly to the syrupy. The best are the simplest and purest, showing why familiar hymns such as "In the Garden," "How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages," and "The Old Rugged Cross" have such staying power. Yet the swelling (synthesized?) strings on "Amazing Grace" and "Silent Night" overwhelm rather than enhance the grace of the material, and the children's chorus provided by granddaughters of Alabama's Teddy Gentry on "Jesus Loves Me" is a little cloying. The unvarnished vocals of guest Ralph Stanley highlight the banjo-and-fiddle-driven "I Am the Man Thomas," and gospel's the Isaacs provide ethereal harmonies on "I Need Thee." Lead singer Randy Owen offers two strong originals to close the album, the ecumenical celebration of "One Big Heaven" and the uptempo "Rain" that sounds most like the old Alabama. --Don McLeese

For the first time, we have a Brooks & Dunn album without a single song cowritten by the two singers. Moreover, the six songs written by Kix Brooks (three with Bob DiPiero) were coproduced by the duo and Don Cook, while the six written by Ronnie Dunn (five with Terry McBride) were coproduced by the duo and Byron Gallimore. It's almost as if this weren't a duo album but rather two solo albums scrambled together. This sharp division of labor may weaken the album in terms of consistency, but it frees Dunn to croon a pair of hard-country ballads--"Hurt Train" and "Too Far This Time"--and to prove once and for all that he's one of the finest honky-tonk singers of his generation. And when Dunn switches to country-pop on the catchy original "You'll Always Be Loved by Me" or on the inspired fiddle-and-steel remake of John Waite's 1984 rock hit "Missing You," the vocals retain that same emotional transparency and drawling resonance. Songwriters who make the jump to recording artist often have a tough time--either their personalities are too introverted or their voices better suited for demos than major-label debuts. But the piano-playing Vassar, who's penned hits for Jo Dee Messina, Tim McGraw, and Alan Jackson, should be able to take the leap in stride. Stylistically, he's gleefully reminiscent of other favorites: "Joe and Rosalita" is dead-on Billy Joel, "Like I Never Loved Before" seems straight out of Michael Peterson, and doesn't that piano line on "Lucky as Me" remind you of Bruce Hornsby? But whether he's a talented imitator or a marketer with an eye for the Billboard charts, Vassar's regular-guy vocals and upbeat persona--undeniably infectious and feel-good, despite several forays into mawkish ballads--seems just the ticket as country meanders through its current identity crisis. --Alanna Nash

What I like about Brooks & Dunn is they never pretend to be anything more than what they are--entertainers whose main goal in life is to come up with hits so catchy they'll grab your attention through the tinniest radio speaker ever stuck in a pickup. Unlike, say, Garth Brooks or James Michael Montgomery, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn never pass themselves off as profound philosophers or social commentators. For this duo, lyrics are just an excuse to belt out a big, juicy chorus hook, usually over an equally sizable dance beat. The partnership of the Thelma and Louise of folk music represents a curious convergence on a few fronts. Hazel Dickens is the daughter of a banjo-picking preacher in West Virginia. Alice Gerrard was raised in Oakland, California, by classically trained parents. A leftist political perspective underscores the songs of both women, but in very different ways. Dickens puts one in mind of old labor while Gerrard was inspired to write "Beaufort County Jail" after reading an article by New Leftist Angela Davis in Ms. What they did share was a deep affection for old-timey music, even if one of the women was weaned on the stuff while the other picked up on it while in college. The two began singing together in 1962; this collection was cut in the mid-'70s and features songs written by both women plus some choice covers, including a jaunty take on Jimmie Rodgers's "Mean Papa Blues" and the Louvin Brothers' "When I Loved You," which showcases their trademark close harmonies. In the end, despite their varied backgrounds, they shared plenty, too, including smarts, spunk, and soul. --Steven Stolder

This 1995 recording captures the Squad's mixture of hillbilly humor (allegedly the basis for much of Jeff Foxworthy's work) and their formidable folk and bluegrass. Lead jokester Ron Thomason handles the comedy with an exaggerated drawl and a somewhat trite hillbillies-are-dumb theme. When it comes to actual music, however, the Squad can truly light it up. Thomason's mandolin and Bill Evans' banjo impressively race through standards including "John Henry," "Late Last Night," and "Blue Grass Breakdown." Gentle ballads such as "Aragon Mill" and the lovely "Hard Times" are handled with sensitivity while "Red Rocking Chair" showcases Suzanne Thomas' clawhammer banjo.
