Smartly programmed and laden with hits from the first half of 2001, the seventh entry in the Now compilation series is a more-than-agreeable, summer-party soundtrack. Moving from up-tempo pop/R&B to various stripes of hip-hop (including a snapping Neptunes remix of Backstreet Boys'"The Call") to three draggy ballads you can easily program out to reminders from Aerosmith, Lifehouse, Evan and Jaron, and American Hi-Fi that guitars still exist, this disc is one of the strongest Nows yet. With the high-quality likes of "Jaded," Janet Jackson's "All for You," Nelly's "Ride wit Me!" (heavily edited for language), and Mystikal's "Danger (Been So Long)" on tap, even Jennifer Lopez sounds pretty good as the beats power by. Does the style-by-style sequencing effectively segregate genres, particularly by placing the rock stuff at disc's end? It's more likely that the appearance of all these tunes in one place demonstrates that the notion of pop as a big tent isn't dead yet. --Rickey Wright

Almost an accidental ensemble, Booker T. & the MGs came together for a functional reason--to play as the house band for Memphis's Stax Records. But organist Booker T. Jones and guitarist Steve Cropper found alchemy, transforming rhythm-section riffing into an art, slicing through air where listeners expected vocals and doing so with tremendous success on their first single, "Green Onions," which was later featured on the American Graffiti soundtrack. This three-CD set captures the quartet's core in plentiful doses, leading off with their 1961 first salvo and cruising through numerous attempts at remaking the soulful classic. But in tinkering with the "Green Onions" formula, the band found dozens of instrumental variations, much like later, all-instrumental genre straddlers like Medeski Martin & Wood. They also found countless hours of work, backing some of Memphis soul's most revered artists (think Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett) and defining a backbone sound of organ and guitar layered over the increasingly vital rhythms of bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and original drummer Al Jackson. They played expansive minor-key soul, as "Ode to Billie Joe" and many other tunes here attest, and later in the 1960s went on to churn out charting hits and great albums alike. The second CD in this set captures some great moments, especially the segments from McLemore Avenue, the quartet's all-instrumental tune-for-tune riposte to Abbey Road. Later in the set you get Albert King on vocals for a gritty "Born Under a Bad Sign" and then Boz Scaggs and Neil Young fronting the quartet (with Steve Potts or Jim Keltner drumming in place of the long-ago murdered Jackson). Working with producer Don Was, the Robinson boys and crew make bold sonic leaps forward, sounding both heavier and more nuanced simultaneously. In the mid-1990s the Crowes' attempts at experimentation were much less successful, often sounding forced or, worse, underdeveloped. With 1999's By Your Side, the band seemed to make a conscious attempt to strip it all down and get back to basics. Lions continues that resurgence, and thanks to Was's influence, builds mightily on that foundation. The good-time swampy swagger is still the defining factor, but for the first time the sonic coloring enhances the tunes as opposed to sapping them of their energy. All the songs flow together, giving the album a cohesion that previous efforts have lacked, and Was generates a bold, vivid sound. Self Portrait stands as a truly perverse collection. Released in 1970 at a time when those on the radical left were hungering for their then-unimpeachable hero to reclaim his role as the conscience of his generation, Bob Dylan instead delivered a pop-inflected collection largely made up of rather indifferently performed covers. Youth culture was at a boiling point and the one figure the vanguard of The Movement hoped would galvanize all those street-fighting men and women was . . . crooning "Blue Moon"? In hindsight, Self Portrait is, at best, pleasant. The uncharacteristically lush likes of "All The Tired Horses," "Wigwam," and "Copper Kettle" are mighty nice, in fact. But then the tepid covers of "The Boxer," "Early Mornin' Rain," and "Gotta Travel On," as well as perplexingly lifeless live versions of "Like a Rolling Stone" and "She Belongs to Me" drag the whole set down and leave one wondering what Dylan was thinking when he selected such a provocative title for such an unrevealing album. --Steven Stolder

In the audiovisual equivalent of a loaves-and-fishes miracle, The Beach Boys: Endless Harmony weaves 45 of the group's songs through extended interview segments with all the original members, key musicians involved in their career-defining recordings, and astute peers and industry observers. Evocative period footage, including archival film and early, no-budget promotional videos, only add to the impact, but the real achievement is the clarity and candor of this authorized project, which might easily have lapsed into callow myth-making and media spin control given the involvement of the surviving Beach Boys and their record label, Capitol, which is releasing both the documentary and a companion hits compilation.

Instead, these archetypal Southern Californians, who transmuted their experiences growing up in suburban Hawthorne into a potent teen iconography orbiting surfing, cars, and girls, tackle the underlying personal and cultural upheavals beneath their discography. The central, dysfunctional drama of the Wilson family--brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl, the group's nucleus, and their manager-father, Murry--is addressed early on, and underlined with harrowing excerpts from session tapes capturing the hard-driving, abusive style of Wilson père. Composer and acknowledged group leader Brian Wilson, who long ago became a poster boy for "troubled genius," pop division, is likewise depicted without evasion or apology, as are the internal tensions between Wilson and other members including Wilson cousin Mike Love; it's a testament to the filmmakers' acuity and skill that Love depicts himself as a force of "positivity... and 'upbeatness'" that counterbalanced Brian's darker, more introverted style, then dismisses the elliptical poetry of Wilson's most artistically ambitious collaborations with Van Dyke Parks as lyrically opaque.

Originally aired on VH-1, Endless Harmony works as an apotheosis of the cable channel's Behind the Music concept, elevating the concept substantially and covering an enormous terrain in 105 minutes. This double-disc anthology presents the diverse musical content of the broadcast in the order it was aired, with Bruce Springsteen's "My City of Ruins" setting the appropriately somber and introspective tone. And while artists such as Stevie Wonder (with assistance from Take 6 on "Love's in Need of Love") and U2 rise to the occasion with the spiritually uplifting grace expected of them, there are a few surprises here as well. Limp Bizkit and Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznick turn in a spare, if seemingly unlikely, cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," appended with a new verse that asks what may be the 21st century's most compelling question: "Do you think we can change?" Even the viewpoint of John Lennon's anthem "Imagine" (as rendered by Neil Young) is occasionally altered to the first person, tellingly turning the song's idealism into a personal challenge. It's a rare event that can credibly sandwich Wyclef Jean's "Redemption Song," Mariah Carey's "Hero," and a chillingly somber take of "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, before offering up the subtly ironic benediction of Willie Nelson's "America the Beautiful." In the midst of its most trying time in a half century (arguably musically, as well as socially), America the sleeping giant awoke--and first listened to its heart. Nearly 25 years after his last significant hit, Billy Squier inexplicably finds himself back in fashion. Rappers like Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Dizzee Rascal have sampled huge chunks of his song "The Big Beat," while "The Stroke" has appeared on the soundtracks of comedy blockbusters Billy Madison and Blades of Glory. Exactly what was Pink Floyd's The Wall? Rock opera? Concept album? Performance art? Mere entertainment? While the truth may lie in a combination of all of the above, during the band's tour of 1980-81, The Wall was a bona fide spectacle. More than anything, Is There Anybody Out There? captures the volume, the bombast, and the grandeur of these famed performances with remarkable accuracy. Meticulously recorded, these concerts are astonishingly faithful to the band's studio versions and flow out of the speakers with practiced authority and absolutely fantastic sound. That said, there are few new revelations to be gained from hearing The Wall live that can't be gleaned from the studio version. Some moments do have an additional spark, however. "Run Like Hell" is launched with blistering intensity, and the first notes of "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" will surely raise a shiver. The release also includes two tracks ("What Shall We Do Now," "The Last Few Bricks") left off the original release due to space constraints. Depending on your perspective, Rush's 1980s work either shows growth and maturity, or it lacks the grand craftsmanship, sheer force, and virtuosity of their peak efforts. In the early '80s, Geddy Lee began adding keyboards and synthesizers to the trio's progressive power sound and the results were rewarding: "Tom Sawyer," "Red Barchetta," "New World Man," "Subdivisions," and "Analog Kid" retain much of the magic. However, the departure of producer Terry Brown and the gaining prominence of the keyboards precipitated a noticeable decline from which the band never fully recovered. Despite some notable achievements on this volume, the 1970s companion volume truly captures Rush at its pinnacle. David Bowie returned to recording after a four-year break with this relatively clean-cut 1983 album. Although offering another definite new direction for Bowie, with Nile Rodgers of Chic helping to produce a stylish post-disco dance sound, Let's Dance is a mixed bag. Much of the album's success was due to its three danceable hit singles--"China Girl," a sensuous Bowie/Iggy Pop collaboration, the distinctive "Modern Love," and the funky title track. However, much of the rest of the album is bland and vapid, marking the start of serious decline in Bowie's songwriting skills. The Farrelly brothers, who brought us Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary, have written a humorous tale starring Alec Baldwin, Shawn Hatosy, and George Wendt about a kid whose blue-collar dad ships him off to a prep school to learn how the better half lives. Plenty of classic rock accompanies the kid's travails since the movie has been set in the early 1970s, when The Eagles, Paul McCartney and Wings, and Steely Dan were the obvious soundtrack to one's coming of age. The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" leads things off (much as it summed things up for Spike Lee's Summer of Sam). Free's classic rock staple "All Right Now" (the predecessor to Bad Company) is a natural, as is Lee Michael's rough and tumble "Do You Know What I Mean." The Doobie Brothers' career is best be divided into two camps. The band originally started out as a good-time party band, as their name implies, churning out a string of rock hits like "Jesus Is Just Alright," "Take Me in Your Arms," and "Black Water." The guitar intro to "China Grove" is a rock classic, lending itself to every bar band in the world. There was something infectious about the early hits--strong melodies, great harmonies, and a genre-bending beat lifted the songs above the ordinary. That rollicking, rocking edge was all but abandoned when Michael McDonald joined. McDonald brought an urban, white-funk feel to the band, as best exemplified by "It Keeps You Runnin'" and "Takin' It to the Streets." Given the sad fate of this intimate 1968 album in its day, Ray Davies and The Kinks must have considered what rock's greatest poetic cipher mused on "Love Minus Zero": "There's no success like failure, and failure is no success at all." In the midst of a year that bristled with such overtly ambitious, often revolutionary fare as The Beatles' White Album, Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and the Stones' Beggar's Banquet, Ray Davies instead paused to reflect on the quaint charms still to be found in the quieter corners of his native England. Powered by an equally precious musical tack, Davies' wistful, impressionistic civic tapestry would be a resounding commercial failure (even as it set the stage for the following year's successful Arthur), yet an album that would eventually come to share the same cherished place among Kinks faithful as Pet Sounds and Love You did among Brian Wilson fans. This collection marks the fifth live Matthews collection in eight years. But while previous surveys have chronicled the band's nascent ambitions (Remember Two Things), initial fame (Live at Red Rocks), solo pretensions (Live at Luther College) and PBS-ready charms (Listener Supported), this double-disc set, recorded at the final show of their '98 tour, seems bent on formally crowning Matthews and company as arena-filling superstars--warts and all.
With a set listing culled largely from the pop-oriented Crash and more internationally experimental Before These Crowded Streets, the proceedings held some promise. But, like most arena bands before them, the DMB generally amps the nuances right out of the mix here. "The Last Stop" recalls where Led Zep's own world-music pretensions led them, while "Pantala Naga Pampa" skirts dangerously close to Kenny G. territory before finding its jazz-funk stride. Though they groove mightily and consistently throughout, the DMB's oft-criticized jam-band ethos often seems strangely burnished and studio-overdubbed to homogenous extremes here. And while legend Maceo Parker's sax further ignites the crowd-pleaser "What Would You Say," as guitarist and frequent Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds plays guest guitar god throughout, it's Matthews's own shamanic, oft-trancelike vocal excursions that barely keep this one from lapsing into DMB's McLive album. Diamond David Lee Roth is back in all his self-congratulatory glory. "My game is better than ever / Winners, they come and go / Legends, they're forever," he boasts on "Slam Dunk!" while his backup musicians play a galloping, surging rhythm that sounds much like early Van Halen. This will come as good news to the legions of old-VH fans mourning the group's hastily aborted reunion effort of the mid '90s. Roth's voice still oozes with sleaze, and his charisma is palpable, even if he can't scream with the authority of days past. But bear in mind that the DLR Band features one original Van Halen member. Guitarist John Lowery is a studio whiz, capable of approximating Eddie Van Halen's harmonic squeals and lightning-fast leads, but neither he nor Roth can write like Eddie. And while tunes such as "Slam Dunk!," "Counter-Blast," and "Little Texas" sound punchy, they lack that knockout blow Van Halen once delivered so effectively. Elsewhere, the DLR Band sound like prime-era Led Zeppelin, with Roth as frontman. This is certainly a fun listen. Just don't expect the second coming of Van Halen. --Jon Wiederhorn

Searching for this missing piece of the Frank Zappa catalog helped Rykodisc secure the rights to the United Artists and post-1985 MGM film libraries. But 200 Motels also serves as a good introduction to the late rock icon/avant-garde composer's absurd view of his world; i.e., the pop music business.
Essentially a filmed dadaist opera (the bulk of the music is performed live as the video cameras rolled, 200 Motels incorporates sporadic patches of Mothers of Inventions rock into the atonal, largely European, musical framework that Zappa was clearly more interested in. He shrewdly used contemporary pop merely as a marketing shill for the complex, often difficult, music that drove him. (For a taste of the film's uniquely skewed artistic sense, Ryko has included the original 200 Motels theatrical trailer as part of this set's enhanced-CD bonus material).
As always, the Zappa of 200 Motels sometimes confuses the profound with the obscene, but with every passing year, he seems more likely to take his place alongside the great American modernist Charles Ives, another composer whose work was every bit as commercially troubled and artistically misunderstood. --Jerry McCulley

It begins with an eerie bit of original autobiography called "This Ol' Wheel," as Jennings, invoking the same no-frills sound of his earlier albums, barrels through a collection of largely self-penned numbers. He invokes the waltz-tempos his dad used so effectively on "Old Friend," creatively punctuated with pedal steel and Mariachi horns. "A Little More Time on You" remains the simplest sort of country lament, even with the R&B horns. He takes another interesting detour with a rough-edged, decidedly countrified remake of Dire Straits' "Walk of Life," a tune so identified with that band and Mark Knopfler that it's difficult to imagine someone else tackling it. While Jennings doesn't surpass the original, his rendition is both effective and unique. The more pensive "Concrete Cowboys" and slicker "Blood From a Stone" is as close as he has (and likely will) come to smoothing his sound. It's true that Shooter hasn't achieved stardom close to Waylon's. Yet he's cultivated an audience by ignoring Nashville's smarmy trendiness and carving his own niche. This underrated 1969 recording was Janis Joplin's first solo studio album after she left Big Brother & the Holding Company. One objection at the time of its release centered on the horn section, which Big Brother loyalists were determined to hate to death. Moreover, the aggregate of musicians backing Joplin--she named the band Kozmic Blues--never solidified as a group, even after earning a warm response on a European tour that spring. There was considerable turnover among the players pulled in for the sessions and considerable discontent as well. Producer Gabriel Mekler would have gladly dumped the band entirely. The best tracks on the album resulted from a single session in June 1969: a supremely delivered rendition of "One Good Man" (with the great Mike Bloomfield on guitar), and, above all, "Little Girl Blue." The Rodgers and Hart estates, however, absolutely loathed Joplin's version of the song, as did a gaggle of older musicians. Joplin changed the words somewhat and made a magnificent tearjerker out of a song that was first performed by Doris Day. This reissue fleshes out the original eight-song collection with a studio outtake of Bob Dylan's "Dear Landlord" and live versions of "Summertime" and "Piece of My Heart" from Joplin's Woodstock appearance. --Myra Friedman

It's difficult for American listeners to remember this, but like the recordings of the Beatles and nearly all other British groups of the '60s, the Rolling Stones' first several albums did not make it across the Atlantic in one piece. Prior to ABKCO's comprehensive 2002 reissue program, the US versions of the Stones' early albums were the de facto standards on CD, but particularly in the case of 1966's AFTERMATH, the UK album was very different.
The track lineup is shuffled and expanded to create a much different mood. "Paint It Black" is gone, replaced as the opening track by the snotty social commentary of "Mother's Little Helper," which--when followed by "Stupid Girl," "Lady Jane," "Under My Thumb," and "Dontcha Bother Me"--is like a pentathlon of punky misogyny capped by the grinding blues jam "Goin' Home." Side Two is more emotionally varied but just as musically far-reaching, adding the poppy "Take It Or Leave It" and "What To Do" to an already strong set of tunes centered on the stunning full-length version of "Out of Time" that for some reason had never been released in the United States before this belated reissue.

For the first five minutes of Down to Earth, one feels like cracking open the champagne to celebrate a triumphant return. To a deliciously dirty blues riff that sounds like Led Zeppelin getting hot and sweaty with prime Black Sabbath, "Gets Me Through" finds Ozzy deconstructing his showbiz persona in a Robbie Williams-turns-rock-god style: "I'm not the kind of person you think I am . . . I try to entertain you the best I can." It's a brilliant track that's at least partially a parody, yet it rocks like a bastard. The rest of the album, however, isn't quite up to the opener's high standards. "Facing Hell," while a fine foot-stomper, is stuffed with horror clichés. The same goes for "Black Illusion" and "Can You Hear Them." The album really goes off the rails, though, with "Dreamer" where Ozzy weeps about global warming and "You Know," in which our hero apologizes to his kids. But even at its worst Down to Earth displays enough eccentricity to keep one entertained and brimming with respect. --Ian Watson

It's good to have all of Thorogood's biggest hits in one place, but Baddest is pretty skimpy on the perennial album-radio cuts, substituting bonus tracks and second-line material. "Ride On Josephine," for example, isn't here. Neither are Chuck Berry's "No Particular Place to Go," "Night Time," and a number of other staples. More suspicious still, "Bad to the Bone" appears with a new remix. Hmm. Looks like someone's leaving some slack for a Volume 2. Since the Thorogood catalog is fairly big, it wouldn't pay to track down his highlights album-by-album, but the Live CD will set you up pretty well. --Gavin McNett

Warren Zevon passed way from mesothelioma, a form of asbestos related lung cancer in 2003. A few months later, his son, Jordan, drove out to one of his dad's storage spaces in the San Fernando Valley to begin the sorting the process. He discovered over a 100 unreleased outtakes and demos in a piano-sized touring case.
Preludes features 16 of the best of these discovered recordings, including 6 unreleased tracks "Empty Hearted Town," "Going All The Way," "Steady Rain," "Stop Rainin Lord" "Studebaker" and "Rosarita Beach CafÃ©." Start with the Meters, whose hard funk is so efficient there's not a wasted note or out-of-sync beat. Add producer Allen Toussaint's wonderful vocal and horn arrangements. Top them off with seven Rebennack originals plus four well-chosen covers, and you have an album that seemed to arrive out of nowhere at the time of its original 1973 release. It still sounds garden-fresh today, not just the monster hits, "Right Place, Wrong Time" and "Such a Night," but also the chain-gang funk of "Same Old Same Old," the verbal insults of "Qualified," even the second-line soul of "Shoo Fly Marches On." The closest thing to a weak link is "Peace Brother Peace," in which Rebennack anoints himself the Dr. Feelgood of love and happiness. But the Meters sound as if they believe every word he's singing, so who are we to argue? --Keith Moerer
