In the middle 1970s I began to formulate ideas and projects leading to the making of music outside the concert halls—often in large open and naturally beautiful sites. Ports, rivers, lakes, caves, quarries, fields, and woods, always ready sources of my musical inspiration, now became my new music theaters. —Alvin Curran Maritime Rites is a series of ten environmental concerts for radio composed by Alvin Curran (b. 1938) in 1985. This series features the Eastern Seaboard of the United States as a musical source in collaboration with improvised musical performances by ten distinguished artists in the American new-music scene: John Cage, Joseph Celli, Clark Coolidge, Jon Gibson, Malcolm Goldstein, Steve Lacy, George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Leo Smith and Alvin Curran. The programs use specifically recorded natural sounds as musical counterpoint to the soloists whose improvisations are freely restructured and mixed by Curran. Featured here are the foghorns of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and New Brunswick, Canada. Also included are maritime bells, gongs, whistles and regional bird and animal life. Comments from lighthouse keepers, Coast Guard personnel and other local people are woven impressionistically throughout.

Rich in ambient detail, Maritime Rites presents the foghorn as indigenous American "found" music par excellence and the source of one of the most enduring minimal musics around us. The series is also a comprehensive aural documentary of our regional and national maritime heritage including such historical sounds as the Nantucket II Lightship, now out of service and doing service as a museum docked in Boston Harbor. The Lightship’s horn is the only one of its kind (and the loudest!) on the East coast and was recorded extensively during an exclusive session ten miles off shore with the special cooperation of the ship’s crew. As the foghorn gives way to other electronic navigational aids, this work may serve as a historical document of some of the most beautiful and mysterious sounds of the sea.

As an expression of sonic geography, Maritime Rites brings together different areas of the Seaboard in a single musical moment. The series was expressly conceived for radio, the only medium that can safely accommodate over sixty foghorns at once and bring an entire coastline, seemingly live, into anyone’s home! Initially, the sophomore album from California beat-shifters the Crystal Method sounds like the same psychedelic beats and psychotic samples that made their 1997 debut, Vegas, such a riot and established them as the only stateside dance act with real spunk. While Tweekend does apply similar grooves and siren sounds, repeated plays prove that the duo of Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan have learned how to melt the mind in addition to rocking the house. With guest spots by Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello and Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland, Tweekend is both subversive and dance-friendly. In "Murder," Weiland sings over a woozy blend of crunching riffs, wah-wah guitars, Moog moos, and mysterious strings for a kind of twisted BT-like pop poetry. "PHD," "Wild, Sweet and Cool," and the organ-grinding "Roll It Up" are classic beats-and-bliss Crystal Method. But "Name of the Game" is straight-up rock and rage, while "Ten Miles Back" and "Blowout" are surreal drives into a nocturnal desert. Tweekend is so dense and delirious, it's hard to find your way out. But you may not want to return from this lost (T)weekend. --Ken Micallef

In 1993, when Shaggy successfully reworked the Prince Buster ska classic "Oh Carolina," he was on the cusp of creating a hot, new ska/pop fusion. Unfortunately, he opted to become a pop-reggae novelty act like Snow. Shaggy's fourth album certainly won't win over new fans or appeal to reggae purists and Capleton enthusiasts, but that's fine by him. While there are no immediate club anthems in the "Boombastic" or "Oh Carolina" vein, Shaggy's coarse vocal delivery shines on the sweet, Latin-music-inspired "Chica Bonita." Likewise, "Not Fair"--where he boasts that he'll take a woman "to the clouds without going downtown"--has Hit Single written all over it. On the downside, Shaggy's rap-reggae flow doesn't match the production values of the R&B production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. On "Lonely Lover," Shaggy and Next's T-Lo bastardize a classic Main Ingredient song, while on "Dance and Shout," he distorts the Michael Jackson legacy by sampling "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)." --Dalton Higgins

Since the Chemical Brothers explosion, new big-beat acts from the U.K. are greeted with skepticism, but Propellerheads are no copycats. Alex Gifford and Will White did the usual groundwork by releasing singles and EPs before giving up a full album. The groovy single "History Repeating," featuring '60s cabaret vocalist Shirley Bassey, plays slightly into the lounge revival of the late '90s but with a James Bond-esque style that grabs attention similar to Portishead's "Sour Times." The recurring spy film theme makes this a perfect soundtrack for Austin Powers's first rave--"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is actually a Bond remake. Propellerheads also slip in full-on "rock" jams ("Bang On!") and slick urban cut-ups reminiscent of De La Soul, who appear on "360° (Oh Yeah?)." Shifting tempos from laidback to lightning-fast with exceptional ease, Decksandrumsandrockandroll is a solid collection of funky, jazzy, hip-hop-influenced dance music that has earned its mainstream acceptance by delivering the goods. --Liisa Ladouceur

Music for Piano with Magnetic Strings (22:58)

A work in which the strings of a piano sound by themselves. Several EBows which cause the piano strings to vibrate and sound are placed on the strings of the piano. The pianist works from a prose score which describes the process and suggests she freely position and reposition five EBows on the piano strings, creating strands of sounds of varying density and texture. Much of her time is spent listening for harmonics, audible beating, occasional rhythms produced as one or more magnets vibrates against adjacent strings, and other acoustic phenomena.

Theme (18:45)

Setting a poem of John Ashbery's to music, Lucier didn't want to violate the flow of the words of the poem by fragmentation or any other cut-up method. The stanzas seemed musical enough just as they were and he wanted the audience to hear the poem more or less in its pristine state, so, working intuitively and by ear, he wrote out the poem for four readers in the order it was written, repeating words and phrases, overlapping and superimposing them in various ways. To "set" the poem, he inserted microphones into the mouths of various vessels, including a small milk bottle, a sea shell, a vase and an empty ostrich egg, to pick up the words as they were sounding inside the vessels. The readers speak normally, allowing the pitches of their voices which match those resonances of the vessels to create musical sounds. Occasionally, however, a reader will tend to emphasize certain pitches more than others, reading in an almost chant-like way, to sound the resonances of the vessels more clearly.

Music for Gamelan Instruments, Microphones, Amplifiers and Loudspeakers (15:09)

Wanting to make a work for Javanese gamelan, but wary of using someone else's music in his own work, it wasn't until he started imagining the bowl-shaped bonangs of the gamelan orchestra more as resonant chambers to be sounded than objects to be struck, that Lucier felt he could make a work for gamelan that he could call his own. During the performance four players place bonangs of various sizes over microphones, creating feedback, the pitch of which is determined by the shape and size of the bowl and the resonant characteristics of the room. Three gender players strike the bars on their metallaphones, searching for the pitches of the feedback strands.

Bulgaria's unaccompanied choral folk music is organic, sophisticated, hypnotic, and mildly disturbing. It is made up of richly pungent melodic strands layered over a supporting drone until they overlap and blend, creating intervals that sound much like Western harmonies. Similar parallel overtones also occur in the Sacred Harp tradition of the Southern United States and in Tuvan throat singing. Cosmic Voices is made up of 21 women, and their voices have a strident, nasal intonation absorbed from nearby Macedonia and Turkey. The compositions can be infectiously gay, mysterious, or even both at the same time. The lively dance tunes are full of hair-raising rhythmic shifts and punctuated by exhortations and exuberant shrieks, while the spacious, dissonant slower pieces unfold and reassemble like the shifting colors of a kaleidoscope. The album was recorded under ideal acoustic conditions, so that the ensemble emerges as a miracle of resonance and clarity. --Christina Roden

Instrumental are a British sextet of hip, classically trained string musicians who have recorded with electronica acts like the Orb and jammed onstage with junglist crews. On Acoustek they serve up "classical" remixes of well-known techno standards--a potentially cheesy project that is more than redeemed by the group's playful intelligence and gutsy feel for the music. Briskly performed and well-crafted arrangements of tunes like Orbital's "Forever," the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" and Moby's "Hymn" do more than just highlight the interwoven patterns and haunting melodies that techno often slips behind its pounding beats; they also expose the debt this music owes to the phasing pulses of minimalists like Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homages to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one which documents the important period between Bryars’ early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski’s Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Maybe it was that downtime at Creedmoor Mental Hospital, but after he tuned out following the breakup of the hardheaded seminal hip-hop group the Ultramagnetic MCs, something must have flipped Kool Keith's wig like a mescaline pizza. I can think of no other way to explain the mutant birth of Dr. Octagonecologyst. Literally assuming another personality on this record, Dr. Octagon--Kool Keith on the mike, with Dan "The Automater" Nakamura producing--transmits unearthly rhymes like tractor beams to your cranium. Then he squirms around in there, grabs some Vaseline from your medicine cabinet, and does a little dance. The first time you listen to cuts like "Earth People" and "Blue Flowers," you might have to change the way you listen to hip-hop. The standards are the same--verse, chorus, verse, with plenty of nasty skits in the middle--and there are electro-beat shades of his predecessors, such as Afrika Baambaata, but the wordplay and beat compositions are truly light years from most hip-hop. Most druggy music chooses clearly between ecstasy and horror; Anthony Gonzalez deliberately blurs the emotional borders. The French musician, now a one-man-band following the departure of partner Nicolas Fromageau, communicates an awareness that even as the darkest trips have a sick thrill to them, the most pleasurable parts of a lysergic voyage have a creepy aftertaste. On the opener, "Moon Child," you can hear both creepiness and pleasure, as a lucid yet happily stoned female voice reveals that "The whole universe will glow," contrasting ominously with the sort of swelling background choirs Pink Floyd amassed when it was time for their big production numbers. And excitement and fear meld on "Don't Save Us From the Flames"; surreal snippets of lyrics ("Out of the flames/ A piece of brain in my hair/ The wheels are melting/ A ghost is screaming your name") are followed by the name "Tina" in a moan all-but indistinguishable from the airy synthesizers. Gonzalez is less adept at constructing structurally-complex compositions than at tunefully arranging sound effects--repetitive keyboard licks that could've been swiped from a '70s PBS documentary soundtrack and bone-scraping blasts of My Bloody Valentine guitar are among his favorite tricks. But his methods are justified by his sense of brevity, and careful alternating between two speeds--soft epic space-trance and vintage shoe-gazer rave-up--adds to the hallucinatory feel. --Keith Harris

This three volume compilation is tribute to the genius of three uniquely talented men--a philosopher, a composer, and a pianist-musicologist. These works began with the philosophical searchings of Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff, an Armenian intellectual at the turn of the 20th century. His homeland was the crossroad for the diverse cultures that ringed the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas. His fascination with the human spirit and his searching for the truth took him on vast journeys through India, Tibet and China. A keen observer, Gurdjieff, began to accumulate bits and pieces of musical traditions. These he combined with his provocatively inspired visions as a universal symbol of his philosophical beliefs. Gurdjieff, however, did not have the musical ability to transform his abstractions into reality. Fortunately, one of his disciples was a gifted and successful composer in St. Petersburg, Thomas Alexandrovich de Hartmann, whom he met in 1917. As a fellow searcher for the truth, de Hartmann was eager to transform the raw musical utterances of Gurdjieff into sophisticated piano compositions. Those scores, sadly, were left in a state of disarray in the estate of de Hartmann. Decades later, musicologist, professor, and pianist Cecil Lytle, became the final element of the equation. In the mid 1980s, he and a team of researchers began a three year quest, scrupulously studying the scattered files of de Hartmann's scores, assembling the first truly accurate arrangements of the Gurdjieff/de Hartmann legacy. A man in touch with the philosophical, as well, as the musical nature of the works, Lytle performs them with deep emotion and unsurpassed skill. The three volumes vary in their nature. James Tenney (b. 1934) is one of the most important American composers and theorists of the past fifty years. For a very long time, his work was known mainly to other musicians and its tremendous influence was belied by its obscurity. In the past twenty years, however, as his music and writings have been more and more published, recorded, performed, and studied, his place in the context of American contemporary music has become far better understood. He has pioneered musical fields as diverse as computer music, tuning theory, and integrating ideas from acoustics and music cognition into his work. Tenney has also been important as a teacher, performer, and scholar of other radical American composers.

This CD contains recordings of the complete set of his Postal Pieces, written primarily during a very brief tenure at California Institute of the Arts in the early 1970s. These works, although frequently performed over the years, have not been recorded (with a few exceptions). This recording is a natural and important companion to the recent New World reissue of Tenney’s computer and electronic music from the 1960s. Both collections represent complete, highly individualistic and essential bodies of work by a major American artist.

The postal pieces, which Tenney called "Scorecards," are a remarkable series of eleven short works printed on postcards. Each card contains a complete if minimally stated work to be performed by instrumentalists. These pieces elucidate to a large degree some of Tenney’s bedrock compositional ideas. Each is a kind of meditation on acoustics, form, or hyper-attention to a single performance gesture.

This set is essential listening for anyone interested in the evolution of American experimental music.

Two years from the two-triple-zero and there's still a huge gap between the musical tastes of black folk and white folk. Case in point: Xscape. Despite having gone platinum and being two CDs deep (Traces of My Lipstick is their third), chances are that their music and names would register a big head scratch in most melanin-challenged homes. Part of that may be image--these ladies have been known to look a tad, uh, rough--or that the Atlanta-based group has been handed songs (usually by the unctuous Jermaine Dupri) that aren't as slick or pop-friendly as some of those other gals' hits. Not so on this CD, which finds the women mainly concentrating on sexy ballads, most of which have to do with playing around or being played on, and decidedly mainstream material like "The Arms of the One Who Loves You." Written and produced by Diane "That's a Hit!" With the premiere of his first opera, VALIS, at Paris's Pompidou Center in 1987, futurist composer Tod Machover--a former protégé of Pierre Boulez and professor at MIT's Media Lab--unveiled an audaciously experimental vision. It was a landmark in the evolution of the genre and managed to capture the interest of a new audience, much as Philip Glass's similarly revolutionary Einstein on the Beach had done a decade previously. VALIS (an acronym for "Vast Active Living Intelligent System") is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by science fiction writer Philip K. Dick. It's a metaphysical tale of multiple identities and psychological transformation, in which the protagonist endures a Parsifal-like quest to reintegrate his personality through understanding his vision of an alternate universe. Machover, who has more recently composed the interactive/Internet work Brain Opera as well as an opera based on the late Tolstoy novel Resurrection, fashioned a score of labyrinthine complexity to evoke the story's many-layered strands of meaning and imagery. Instead of a traditional orchestra, it calls for just two live players--a keyboardist and percussionist--and a formidable array of computer-generated sounds (including, for example, synthesizers, samplers, and "hyperinstruments" that subtly respond to the live musicians' gestures). These provide a richly contrasting sound world--ranging from terrifying splinters to a shimmering halo--for the cast of eight, who alternate between spoken voice-overs and amplified singing. Yet for all the technology, the music is consistently involving rather than cold and abstract and is enriched by Machover's enormous frame of reference. This is, after all, a work that incorporates hints not only of the Romantic poet Novalis but of the Who's rock opera Tommy. Depeche Mode's lyrical content, at times impossibly contrived, is a potential source of frustration. "I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours / But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour / And when I die / I expect to find him laughing," goes the chorus of "Blasphemous Rumours," an antireligion song using attempted teenage suicide and fatal car accidents as testimonial. Lyricist Martin Gore always scores points for creative rhyming, but one gets the feeling the choice of subject matter is nearly arbitrary, that the band could write equally depressing songs about a bad hair day--and mean it. But this is the fun, and maybe even the genius, of Depeche Mode. When it comes to patent controversy, they are as self-indulgent as they wanna be. Depeche's first U.S. single, "People Are People," also contained on Some Great Reward, is no less of an eye roller than "Blasphemous Rumours," but its tone is inversely inspiring to the nihilistic picture painted by "Rumours." The term "Fourth World" has often been used to describe various ethno-electronic compositions. Joining trumpeter Jon Hassell in different combinations on Possible Musics are coproducer and synthesist Brian Eno and percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Ayibe Dieng, among others. Released in 1994, this album features Budd performing original compositions with the contemporary music quartet Zeitgeist, a group who play woodwinds, keyboards, and percussion, including mallet instruments. Most of the album was written in 1991 at a time when Budd had returned to writing music for ensembles. While indulging in the minimalist aesthetics that epitomize his work, this album showcases his ideas in a different spectrum than his ambient albums. These 18 compositions average two to two-and-a-half minutes in length, some exploring one theme, others compacting two or three into the same time frame. Unlike many other minimalists, pianist/composer Budd does not belabor his points. She Is a Phantom is generally characterized by mellow tracks such as the ghostly haze of "Nearly Awakened." But there are exceptions, including the gracefully spiraling clarinet melody over piano chords in the opening track and the eclectic "Like Perfume," which segues between an abstract percussive tapestry, a clarinet solo, and a poetry reading accentuated by a marching snare. Four of the songs feature Budd reciting poetry, and the vocal inclusion is not intrusive, blending in with the musical backdrops. This album is perhaps one of Budd's most cryptic works, particularly as some tracks melt into others. While not as easily accessible as many past efforts, it is a gratifying journey nonetheless. The English horn is amplified and processed through several digital delay devices and mixed live with the tape part. The tape part was createed using raw material garnered from sampling fragments of an old 78 rpm recording from the twenties of "The Swan of Tuonela" by Sibelius. The 'low fi' sound and even the surface noise of the old acetate record, clearly heard at the very beginning of the piece, are essential to the dark qualities I tried to produce in this music.

HOLY GHOSTS oboe d'amore with live digital delay processing

After the satisfying experience of working with Libby Van Cleve on Dark Waters, we both decided another collaborative venture was in store for us. Although I am fond of the oboe itself, my preference for the lower range and darker timbres of its tenor and alto cousins led me to turn to the Oboe d'Amore, an instrument frequently found in Baroque music but rare in the modern repertoire. One of the most famous uses of the Oboe d'Amore in the Bach canon is found in the B Minor Mass, in the Basso aria 'Et in Spiritum Sanctum' - part of the Credo. There two Oboes d'Amore interweave lines with the singer which suggest not so much a rarefied holy spirit but a dancing one; the music has grace, flow and sprightliness. I have taken some snatches of melody from these parts and recreated my own take on the Holy Ghost. As the oboist plays the Bach fragments, digital delay processors echo them back and create spiraling rich textures which build up to create "ghosts" of the original material.

RAVE was created for the choreographer Paula Josa-Jones who commissioned it for her solo dance work Raving in Wind. The imagery in the work was primarliy avaian which led me to explore the use of bird calls - especially those of ravens and loons. The latter create haunting, plaintive cries, heard over northern lakes at night, as well as a kind of pealing laughter! The ravens have a most diverse vocabulary and are capable of an unusually complex array of sounds; I created a kind of gamelan with the few I sampled. In the middle section of the piece, the bird sounds give way to samples of southeast Asian instruments which share with the bird calls an elemental, primal sound; they too seem to emerge from the natural world. In the final section, all the sounds come together.

This is the fifth Henri Pousseur CD in Sub Rosa's Early Electronics series, exploring the work of this Belgian theoretician and experimental/avant garde composer. Along with previous releases in this series, Electronic Experimental and Microtonal (1953-1999) is comprised of 5 rare pieces that span over 45 years of microtonal and electronic work. Performed by Rohan de Saram (Quatuor Arditti), Evert van Tright (who played mainly Stockhausen), Brigitte Foccroulle, Danielle Dubosch, Isabelle Schmit (three great Belgian pianists) Sumila Goto, Mikoto Jakahata, Shuzan Morita (from the Japanese Yonin No Kai Trio) and for the first and only time, Henri Pousseur himself. These recordings are a continuation of Sub Rosa's earlier releases, namely: Musique Mixte, Lige Paris, 8 tudes Paraboliques and 4 Parabolic Mixes. Henri Pousseur studied at the Academies of Music in Lige and in Brussels from 1947 to 1953, and was closely associated with Pierre Froidebise and Andr Souris. He encountered Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luciano Berio, and thereafter devoted himself to avant-garde research. As Posseur describes of his music: "When I first met Pierre Boulez in 1951, we both agreed that the materials of the young serial music had to be renewed, both on a purely acoustic basis (electronic music) and in the relationships between its components." Generally regarded as a member of the Darmstadt School in the 1950s, Pousseur's music employs serialism, mobile forms, and aleatory, often mediating between or among seemingly irreconcilable styles, such as those of Schubert and Webern, or Pousseur's own serial style. From 1970 until his retirement in 1988, he taught at the University and Conservatory of Lige where he also founded the Centre de Recherches et de Formation Musicales de Wallonie.

Is it forgivable that the second volume of songs from Adam Sandler's mid-'80s-revival comedy begins with Kajagoogoo's famously limp "Too Shy"? Not really, but the rest of the disc does a good job of recapitulating worthy memories from the era of torn-sweatshirt necks and mulletheads--not just with new-wave novelties but with Madonna and Hall & Oates staples ("Holiday" and "You Make My Dreams," respectively) as bouncy and glossy as anything the also-present Depeche Mode ("Just Can't Get Enough") and Dead or Alive ("You Spin Me Round [Like a Record]") ever put on the radio or MTV. The Cars' "It's All I Can Do" and the J. Geils Band's "Love Stinks" encapsulate the Sandler character's romantic frustrations, while the star's own "Grow Old with Me" actually points toward a serious career as a singer/songwriter for our boy. Ever since Björk's vital, effusive 1993 debut, her music has been increasingly intimate, gently private, and concerned with seclusion. It's typical then that Vespertine's first single is called "Hidden Place." The studious solitude is rewarding, though. Vespertine is a lush, gorgeous swell of midpace electronica, symphonic strings, and Björk's uniquely alien, spectral vocals. There are fantastical wonders here. "Cocoon" (another eulogy to withdrawal from the world) is delicate as a breath, Björk sounding too fragile to be flesh as she lauds "a beauty this immense." "Pagan Poetry" and "Aurora," likewise, are adrift in an enchanted reverie. When she chooses, she crafts killer tunes; "It's Not up to You" is as lovely as anything on Post. Yet, frequently, on such tracks as the yearning, glancing "Undo," Björk seems to be simply thinking aloud, reveling in this wildly rich and visceral music. She's reclaimed cutting-edge electronica, so often the province of geeks and technicians, for the poets and the passionate. Renowned German composer Peter Michael Hamel turned his focus to the pipe organ for his dramatic composition, Organum. The four-part score is based on the medieval music form, the organum.

In Latin, the term organum has two meanings; it either refers to the organ or to the polyphonic Gregorian chant. Hamel combines the two meanings as he masterfully performs on the grand pipe organ at the Academy of Music in Munich, his instrument taking the place of the human voice.

The polyphonic form of organum came to its height in 12th century Paris, with composers associated with the Notre Dame Cathedral. Their settings contained contrasting sections; voices rhythmically patterned, discantus style, alternating with sections in which the chant notes were prolonged to accommodate the many notes sung above them, organal style.

Hamel incorporates these contrasting sections in the four parts of Organum, an inspired and moving performance by this artist and composer.

LTM is proud to announce a new CD in our series by visionary French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), following the success of previous releases Vexations, Socrate, Musique de la Rose + Croix and Dada Works, on which we present selected Satie recordings with explicit links to the unconventional, the mystic and the avant-garde. Cubist Works offers four works composed by Satie between 1913 and 1924 for his collaborations with the artist Pablo Picasso. These include piano and orchestral versions of his scores for the celebrated ‘Cubist’ ballets Parade (1917) and Mercure (1924), as well as the seldom-heard organ ‘diversion’, The Statue Found (1923). The 60 minute CD also includes The Puppets Are Dancing, written for the French Futurist dancer and poet Valentine de Saint-Point in 1913, and the ludic Trois Valses distinguées du précieux dégouté (‘Three Disgustingly Precious Waltzes’), a barbed swipe at rival composer Maurice Ravel and premiered at an exhibition of works by Picasso, Matisse and others in 1916. The solo piano works on this CD are performed by Bojan Gorisek. The booklet includes archive images and detailed liner notes by James Hayward.
