The first live album from up-and-coming blues guitarist and singer Deborah Coleman is a sheer delight, chock-full of evidence that someday she'll be considered one of the brightest stars in blues. Soul Be It! starts off nice and easy, with the uptempo-yet-relaxed "Brick." That's just to warm you up, however. By the time "I'm a Woman" rolls around, Coleman's guitar playing catches fire. As for her voice, it's more like Turkish coffee than hot chocolate; there's a richness to her singing that a connoisseur will appreciate. The 12-minute final track, "Goodbye Misery," is a revelation: in a mere eight tracks, Coleman takes her listeners from the opening bars (the bars' opening?) at 9 p.m. all the way to 2 in the morning, with relentless energy. Coleman has to be one of the hardest-working women in the business; she mentions being home perhaps two weeks out of the year. This 1964 release was the second collaboration between Frank Sinatra and Count Basie, and features a much higher percentage of swing-oriented arrangements (courtesy of Quincy Jones) than the previous Sinatra-Basie. This time around, the Count Basie Orchestra gives the swinging treatment to such contemporary numbers as "More," "I Can't Stop Loving You," "Wives and Lovers," and "Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)," and Sinatra responds with plenty of exuberance and gusto. He's a master of setting a mood, whether it's the intimacy of "Stuttering Blues," the sweetness of "Wobbling Baby," or the lamentation of "My Baby Don't Love Me," and he's so subtle that most of the time you don't even notice him doing it. A 106 track survey of alto sax player Bostic, a technical master of his instrument who cut his teeth with many jazz bands during the 1930s. He was to become a hugely influential player who had many hits during his '50s heyday with a jump blues and R&B stlye. Johnny "Guitar" Watson was adept at keeping current, so it’s ironic that by the time of this 1994 album, released after a decade’s layoff, he was soaking up the sounds of Prince, who had of course been deeply influenced by Watson himself. Gatemouth Brown has come full circle. The Texan launched his recording career back in 1947 with a big band behind him; more recently, first with 1997's Gate Swings album and now this follow-up effort, he's again achieving transcendence alongside a large ensemble. Brown remains a marvelous guitar picker, adding poignant commentary to the broken love plaint "Guitar in My Hand" (his update of a tune from 1947). He reacts to the horn and rhythm sections with taut, witty, jazz-inflected responses on swinging treatments of Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning to See the Light" and the Kansas City blues-jazz anthem "Jumpin' the Blues." Oh yes, Brown has tremendous command of guitar textures--declarative, subdued, greasy, sensual, prickly, and more. He's an expert fiddler too--note "Rock My Blues Away." And he shows considerable individuality and wisdom as a singer, waxing plaintive on Percy Mayfield's "Strange Things Happen" and assuming a devilishly matter-of-fact attitude for his Lone Star State shuffle "Without Me Baby," where singer Kaye Doran adds to the fun. So on the Virginia singer-guitarist's second CD, her own funky soul-blues tunes like "My Heart Bleeds Blue" and the stomping "Roll with Me" find their place next to more complex, swinging material like an up-tempo arrangement of Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow." Coleman's songwriting is better here than on her raw-but-right 1994 debut on New Moon, Takin' a Stand, and her vocals bring an air of weary emotional detachment to the heartbreakers. The only quibble is that she doesn't take enough risks with her guitar. On From the Dust, slide guitar virtuosa Rory Block has both feet in the blues and at least one hand on the Bible. Her artistry provides a bridge between the spiritual hymnal and the "devil's music" as which the blues has long been branded. Original material such as the title track, "The Gate," and "David Had the Blues" evoke Scripture against the deep groove of Block's propulsive guitar playing, while "Remember" represents a personal testament to the power of faith. These tracks seem to channel the inspiration of the Reverend Gary Davis, but Block also pays tribute to more secular-minded blues masters, such as Charley Patton ("High Water Everywhere"), Muddy Waters ("I Be Bound"), Robert Johnson ("Stones in My Passageway"), and Son House ("Dry Spell Blues"), matching her command of their instrumental styles with her breathy, sensual vocals. Austin scene queen Price's sixth album is another enjoyable exercise in her signature "hippie blues" stylings, a comfortable cross-pollination featuring country, R&B, and a few jazz tinges. Price's imperfect but evocative voice is showcased in front of outstanding instrumental work, especially from acoustic guitarists Rich Brotherton and Casper Rawls, while legendary guitarist James Burton provides touches on nine of the 13 tracks. Strong songwriting, from sources as diverse as Walter Hyatt ("Get the Hell Outta Dodge"), Dr. John (the previously unrecorded "Clouds"), Mel Torme (the title track), and longtime Price associate Gwil Owen, gives the singer ample opportunity to work her relaxed wonders. Guitarist Coco Montoya started out playing rock & roll, and it shows. On his fourth album, the former John Mayall and Albert Collins sideman rocks his blues hard, with the occasional soul-flavored ballad thrown in for variety. The album kicks off on a note that's high-energy yet relaxed, as Montoya declares that "Enough Is Enough." "I Need Your Love in My Life" is as upbeat and cheering as can be, a sure cure for rainy-day doldrums. And with "Don't Take It Personally" and "You Didn't Think About That," Montoya certainly rocks out. But he's got a soft side too, as the smoky "Fool" and the tender "Nothing but Love" handily illustrate. Although, like his mentor Mayall, Montoya is an indifferent vocalist, he more than makes up for it with his guitar work, which is both expressive and technically brilliant--the blistering solo on "Beyond the Blues" is proof enough of that. Suspicion is Montoya's first album for Alligator Records, and it's unsurprisingly a bit smoother around the edges than his previous records for Blind Pig. The celebrated performers featured on this five-disc box--John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy (Rice Miller) Williamson among them--were seasoned veterans when these recordings were made between 1962 and 1965. They were, however, far from over the hill. Brought to Europe as part of an annual barnstorming tour designed to introduce the blues to the old country, the forefathers (and a few mothers) of various strains of the genre basked in their chance to show their skills to appreciative foreign audiences. They also clearly enjoyed each other's company. The nature of the American Folk Blues road shows made for some fascination collaborations: The 1962 set, for example, finds Hooker, then in his brooding prime, backed by guitar legend T-Bone Walker--on piano! You could call graying folkster Michael Hurley one of the most respected singer-songwriters to ever be underappreciated in this great country of ours. But it might be more precise to cast him as contemporary acoustica's most poignant absurdist. Casting his subjects in both droll and sorrowful settings, he regularly makes the improbable seem like a sure bet. He's a naturalist, too. Smitten with hollow logs, snoozy dogs, and the mists rising from a pond as evening drifts down, Hurley's able to find some kind of profundity in every corner the great outdoors. "Swingin' on a Seven-String" was recorded on August 12th & 25th in 1982 and originally released in 1984 as "When Lightn' Strikes" on LP. In addition to being the last studio album that Lenny Breau recorded before his untimely death in 1984, "Swingin' on a Seven-String" also remains as the only studio recordings of his seven-string acoustic guitar playing. In addition to the five tracks featuring Lenny and acoustic bassist Jim Ferguson performing duets, Lenny is joined by pedal steel guitar legend Buddy Emmons and drummer Kenny Malone on the remaining quartet tracks. Eight of the eleven tracks feature Lenny on seven-string acoustic guitar, while the other three tracks feature Lenny on six-string electric guitar. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original analog master tapes using 24-bit digital technology. The CD also features one previously unreleased bonus track, "Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain". The 12-page booklet includes extensive liner notes! by author Ron Forbes-Roberts as well as commentary from Buddy Emmons and Jim Ferguson.

Because he was a black man with an acoustic guitar, Ted Hawkins often falls into the blues category, but this description ignores prominent elements of his music. A better description comes from writer Peter Guralnick, who called it simply a "rural adaptation of contemporary soul music." In his "rural soul," Hawkins incorporates the direct approach of Delta blues, the resignation of country music, the honest and idiosyncratic lyrics of folk, the hope of gospel, and the rich and tender vocals of soul. On this 1994 live album, Hawkins's urgent guitar strumming and infectious singing captivates and connects with the audience--after all, playing solo in front of a crowd is where Hawkins had the most practice, after years of Venice Beach busking. "All I Have to Offer You Is Me" was a hit for Charley Pride, country music's most celebrated African American performer. Hawkins renders a gripping a cappella version of John Fogerty's "Long as I Can See the Light," and his reading of Webb Pierce's honky-tonk staple "There Stands the Glass" is a perfect example of the emotional investment in whatever he sings. The timing could not be better for Terrence Blanchard's Blue Note debut release, Bounce. At age 41, Terence Blanchard joins fellow label mates and friends who, like him, have matured into modern standard-bearers, each with their own take on jazz tradition and their own particular interests. With Bounce, Blanchard convenes a diverse group of talented young musicians, all of whom help highlight the many facets of his musical vision.

The music on Bounce doesn't stay in one place, and it exemplifies Blanchard's style, which prompted People Magazine to comment: "Blanchard's virtues spring from his sense of restraint. The joy is in the tease!"

Blanchard has had successes in film music, orchestras and education, and of course as a jazz musician and bandleader. A batch of new vittles and encores of some of his classic tunes, Ancestral Swamp bubbles with laid-back ease and tremolodic goodness. Most songs have the simplest of arrangements: Hurley singing solo, accompanied by his guitar, Wurlizter organ, or fiddle. Tara Jane O Neil helps lend a nice touch to El Dorado, and Snock calls upon frequent past accomplices Dave Reisch and Louie Longmeyer for their graceful touch on sleepy winners like New River Blues and Gamblin Charlie. As with all Hurley s albums, once one sets the needle down, one is put in a certain peace and place. His voice and songs are unique, shuffling with characters and visions clear and wild. Omar Dykes's assertive rocking roots music comes from an aural intersection where Howlin' Wolf meets John Fogerty deep in the heart of Texas, getting its power from a big beat and the evocative resonance of Dykes's rumbling vocals. The charismatic Dykes, born in Bo Diddley's home town in Mississippi, has made his band a stalwart of the Austin blues scene for a couple of decades, but Big Delta puts the spotlight squarely on him, and he rises to the occasion with his most satisfying recording yet.

Dykes surrounds himself with an all-star edition of the Howlers and elevates and expands some of his best material, demonstrating more depth and diversity in his playing while retaining the primal power of his trademark growling blues approach. Bassist Roscoe Beck, best known for his work with guitarists Robben Ford and Eric Johnson, is a key to much of the recording's musical success, but he's ably assisted by veteran drummers Terry Bozzio and Frosty Smith, who split percussion duties. Worldbeat star Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne supplies some exotic sonic spice via guitar, sitar, and dobro to Dykes's meat-and-potatoes guitar solos.
